We have a 36' Pearson and the other day we were sailing and when coming into the harbor while motoring neutral and reverse stopped working from the shifter at the pedestal - we only had forward or off. The transmission sounded fine but was not shifting properly. Once we adjusted the linkage so that we now have forward, neutral and reverse, the transmission started making a load rattling noise which is loader in forward than reverse. Does anyone know what would cause this and what to do. We disconnected the linkage and shifted the transmission manually to try and get it to work without the load rattling but this did not help.

If you know you manually engaged it fully then a rattling sound is often indicative of a bad damper plate. Could also be internal to the gear box. Not much you can do from the outside except add transmission fluid, check the fluid or manually shift into and out of gear..
