I bought a 1976 Catalina 27 that included a spinniker and spinniker pole. I'm not interested in using it and want to sell it but have no idea of what it's worth, It appears to be in good shape but has the number 3037 on it. Does the number devalue it's worth? Can someone give me an idea of what I should sell it for?

Also, what is the difference between a regular spinniker and an asymmetrical one.

Thanks...

Harris

It will be worth far more in the long term with the boat unless you never going to sell it

We pick up used ones depending on age for 1/3 of the new price

Are you sure you don't want to keep it? You might not be ready to use it now but might want to at some point. Yes, they are called bags of terror but they are a lot of fun. I'd hang on to it for the time being.

Actually, it has no real value. You might as well just scrap it. I'll give you $20 shipped just to get it off your hands.

The numbers ruin any chance of re-sale ... I can offer $30 for the spinnaker and pole.

Gotta agree.. the numbers ruin any chance of re-sale. I'll give you $50 + shipping to properly dispose of it

You could go online to Bacons.com and see if they have the same sail in about the same condition. They might even have the pole, but since you don't give us the size....

a "REGULAR" SYMETRICAL SPINNAKER HAS THE LUFF AND LEECH AT THE SAME SIZE. AN A-SYM HAS THE LUFF LONGER THAN THE LEECH, SO MORE LIKE A GENOa, REALLY.,

A pole can give you vastly improved downwind performance if you use it on your head sail. A pole also helps steady the head sail so wing & wing sailing is not so difficult. Keep the spinnaker you might want it as you gain more experience.

I wouldn't sell it. It may be really useful to you in the future. Not sure what your cruising grounds are like but I would have loved to have had one this past week because I spent a lot of time doing downwind in light wind.

Check here to see what Minnie's Discount Marine is selling used spinnakers for: http://www.minneysyachtsurplus.com/s1.html
I'd be surprised if you were able to get more the $600 for both of them and shipping that pole will not be cheap.
So I am with the keep them both camp. The spinnaker pole can be very useful with the genoa going downwind as previously pointed out and you WILL want to try using the spinnaker someday, trust me on this. You will want a good, salty crew of 3 to 4 on board to fly it the first time though. Better still would be to crew for another boat that routinely flies a spinnaker and see how it is done before you try it on your boat.
When the wind is going your way and it is not too strong it really is the way to sail.

I'm with everyone else. Keep the spinnaker. Even asymmetrical spinnakers take some learnin' to use and the symmetrical ones must be even more challenging. But dang what an experience. And when someone pulls up, takes your picture and tells you how cool it looks... Priceless!

With autopilot, you can fly it with 2 people. A few fellows in our club does it solo. Pretty impressive. I want to learn from them.

Last weekend, we had a very light wind day. We were doing 3.7kt in 3kt apparent wind. Passing every boat without a spinnaker. They were doing less than 1kt. Because when a boat going downwind, the apparent wind is true wind speed minus boat speed. Without a big spinnaker, you won't be moving.

IMHO, even if you are not racing, the Spinnaker is a must have. You can arrive a few hours before other boats. Finished happy hours and dinner before the other boats show up.

You can get a sock (see ATN) to help fly the kite. It make it much easier.

I would suggest to keep it and learn how to fly it. You'll love it.

I was just informed the other day that the PO of my boat came across one for my 310, including a sock and the price is $400. I will probably take a look at it and see if it is in good condition. I already have a pole (hopefully it will work). Don't know if that's the going price but it's a general idea for you.

It's really LESS THAN NO VALUE to me, REALLY, as I have a P-31 with a full sized spinnaker, but I'll give you MORE THAN $20, AND FULL SHIPPING COSTS, to send it to a friend of mine with a Pearson 28. It would be just about right for him.

Otherwise, PLEASE, keep it with your boat and learn to use it!

If you are sailing on the Columbia River, you will find that you need that chute. Our sailing is about 80% upwind but with current, and downwind against current.
That, and a lot of evenings under 12 or 15 kts -- often much less.

With an AP engaged, you will be able to single hand that size boat with the chute on a light air day.
Instead of motoring with noise, exhaust, and boredom, you can sail... and that's why you bought the boat in the first place...
:)

Others can comment on an A-sail vs a standard Spinnaker. I have sailed both, and either can be very useful, Either one has plusses and minuses. On our river a standard tri-radial spinnaker like yours is often easier to fly because our downwind sailing is so far off the wind.

Fair winds,

1+ -save the symmetrical, and keep the pole on the boat.

-you should crew on a race boat, to see how it is flown. -then look at socks. that makes them easy to control, and douse.

if you ever go down south along the coast you'll want it.

now if you could TRADE it for a genniker (reaching kite), or a asymmetrical, I'd say trade it.

I figure its worth 1 - 1.5 knts downwind vs just the jib and main

A spinnaker pole's length is limited to the "j" dimension. That would be 11ft 2in on a catalina 27 standard rig and 12ft 2 3/8in on TALL rig (the tall rig has a bowsprit).... that said..... the pole can be shortened by removing one of the end caps, trimming the tube and remounting. Here's a 12 footer on Ebay for $350:

The numbers on the sail can be removed/replaced. www.thesailwarehouse.com sells a new full-race (symetrical) spinnaker for $1425. Yours is used but may be in good shape and from a well known sailmaker(North, Ulman, UK, etc.) which increases it's value. I'd call a local sailmaker for his opinion, he might even have a buyer for you, the pole too....

Sorry Mr. Bill....... but I was not aware that sailors used dousing socks on symetrical racing spinnakers. That would be an exceptionally inconvenient piece of gear with sheets, guys, topping lifts and the upwind sails to deal with... besides the pole and the high riding chute.

BTW, a gennaker is an asymetrical sail.

Seems I was outbid and the highest offer on the table is $50 + shipping. Probably the better offer....however, I'll come pick it up for $51 and a vintage Bananarama cassette without a case.

Tape needs work and I have all the parts. It can be rewound with a #2 pencil.
