Help! I have a Pearson 34 (1984) she's a great boat but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to service the Barient 24-45 two speed self-tailing jib winches - unlike other models there is no spring to release to remove the drum - I have searched extensively on the net to no avail - has anyone got a service manual?

Thanks!

Just in case you missed this site, http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/ scroll down to the "winches" tag and see if you can get some help from their extensive list of Barient/Barlow service manuals. (Unfortunately, when I looked I did not see a "24-45" model .... but you may recognize one similar enough to yours to help.)

I have standard Barlow winches and the drum is released by removing a hex bolt at the top of the shaft, accessed through the winch handle socket.

Is this like yours? http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/winches/bar28_stw.htm it suggests using a universal deck plate key to remove the retaining nut.

How to service a Barient 24-45 winch

On the top of your winch there should be a circular chrome or stainless steel disk with two small holes in it. The holes are about 3/16" diameter. Place a spanner wrench in the holes and turn the disk counterclockwise to remove the drum from the main shaft. The disk is like a large nut. If you don't have a spanner wrench you can try placing a steel rod into one of the holes and carefully tap it counterclockwise. Reverse the process to install it.

No there are no holes on mine but I did fine out how to remove the cap screw - jsut don't see how to remove the self-taining jaws & remove the drum...

Barient Barlow # 25

I have a pair of Barlow #25 2speed winches but they are not self tailing There is a hex nut for an allen wrench inside the handle socket. You probably have the same but it must be under
the self tailer mechanism. There has to be a way to remove it.

After you get them apart and clean them up regrease with a waterproof synthetic grease. Ive tried both the standard marine grease and a synthetic grease called amsoil. The synthetic works much better.
