Finsh or anti-foul

ladies and gents,
As a new sailer, can someone please advise as to which type of paint I need to use on the hull of our now-primed Daysailer. Am I right in thinking the under-water areas of the hull should be finished with a regular polyurathane finish (3x coats) and then over painted with a anti-foul...I bought 2x tins of anti-foul on advice but I think I really needed finsh coat first...we are in fresh water and only using the boat as a daysailer...so it will not be kept in the water. Do i really need an anti-fouling over-coat?

If you have a day sailer that you are pulling out of the water, you are better off with nothing (no anti-fouling). You only need it if you plan on leaving it in the water.

If you need anti-fouling paint, use what everyone else in your area has success with.

Yup.. If you aren't keeping her in the water, get the botom as slick as you can get it .. wet sand with 200, then 400, and then 600 or so before final paint and then after last coat and the paint has cured a few weeks, do that again..

If you are going to put the anti fouling paint on the hull (it should be an ablative type, if you are trailering, BTW) it can go right over the primer.

Many thanks for the advice, I bought Brightside Dark Blue, looks great now...will take back the Anti-foul...now to get 'er Rghtsideup and back on the trailer.

Just, FYI, polyurethane paints are not guaranteed under the waterline. So, if you get blisters in your paint job, then you know why. I wrote an article on antifouling paint ealier this spring. Go find it. It might help answer some of your antifouling paint questions.
