1990 Mercury O/B- How can you raise RPM in neutral?

My (new to me) 1990 Mercury electric start O/B has a single lever control lever on its tiller handle. You twist, (rotate) the the handle counter clockwise to go into forward and then accelerate. Kinda like a motorcycle. If you twist the tiller clockwise, from neutral, then you go into reverse and further turning accelerates the engine in reverse. This is actually convenient, but is there a way to accelerate the engine without going into gear? Arrangemets like this usually have a way to disconnect the shift mechanism, but I don't see any. No operator manual is available. I purchased the Seloc book but it covers only repairs, not operation. Anyone actually familiar with this engine? Ernie

My 2006 Mercury O/B had a button about 1" round on the starboard side that you can press then accelerate. This would rev up the engine but not engage the transmission. Is there one for yours? My lever works just like the way you described.

Just rotate choke knob clockwise

Thanks to you both. I'll look for the throttle only button if if its not there, then I try rotating the choke
