Recess, my wife is a teacher and wants to name our next boat Truancy.
I had not thought of Truancy, awesome idea. We named our C22 Rambler, but my wife had considered Playing Hookey. I thougt it was too much t say.

I don't have a name for my boat yet. I am trying to think of one, but no good names are bubbling to the surface. We just bought it; and I have no ideas. My husband is no help. We don't have kids. And, the dogs just don't give a damn. We might have to name it next year. It isn't bad luck to sail on a boat that doesn't have a name, is it?
I have friends that waited two years to name one of their sailboats and the other is still unnamed. I do not think it is bad luck at all and think if you are going to pick a name that is going to be around for a long time, it should have well reasoned thought behind it. The right name will come to you when the time is right for it.

One of my passions is the night sky and Orion (the Hunter) is my favorite constellation. The problem is, every marina has a Hunter named Orion in it for obvious reasons. (the "Orion" in our marina now sits across the pier from us,) Years before I had gone to the sailboat show in Atlantic City. Hunter had their then current around-the-world racer "Thursday's Child" on display (Monday's child is fair of face , Tuesday's child is full of grace, Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go....) Later they came out with "Hunter's Child". I combined to two into "Orion's Child". When I moved from the H28.5 to our current H33.5 I just kept the name. We now refer to the old boat as OC1. I saw that OC1 (still had the name) was recently sold on ebay.

The dinghy I built is named "Child's Play"

Jack, I'm from the same marina as "Topp Heavy" so I know the boat.

I forgot about one boat name earlier... I want in half on a 22' fishing boat with a friend, we were trying to come up with a good name for her, and wanted to keep a sailing theme somehow as we are both sailors first and foremost. Since my girlfriend (Jennifer, but goes by Jen or Jenny) and I had just starting seeing each other at the time, we went with the name "Iron Jenny" as we would always be using the "iron genoa" to get around in that boat since it has no sails. Also scored big points for me when she found out it was named thinking of her :)

We bought our boat from a wonderful English gentleman who had named the boat "English Rose". He had to sell the boat for health reasons and we didn't have the heart to change the name since it sat within sight of his home. He has since passed away and knowing how much he loved the boat we can't change it. We did name the dink "Rose Bud"

I've named two boats. The first was a Coronado 23' that I restored from a wrecked hull. After she was completed, I outfitted her with two 50# trust trolling motors and a bank of solar panels. Since the sun and the wind are free, I named her "The Delta G".

For those who are not science types, delta = change in and "G" is the symbol for the thermodynamic term know as "Free Energy". So the boats name in nerd-speak was "A change in free energy".

The second boat I named was my current MacGregor V222. The PO had named her Wind Dancer and I didn't like the name. After a fresh coat of paint I decided to wait until the boat told me her name. On the maiden voyage after the restoration, I had dropped anchor in a cove and was taking a swim with the kids when a swarm of dragonflys landed on my hat and on both of the kids heads (while we were in the water). So we named her "Dragonfly"

How about "The Dogs Don't Give A Damn" or some shortening of that?

There are some people at our marina that sail with three small dogs. The name of their sailboat is Dogs For Sail.

My son's and daughter's middle names go way back in my wife's and my families and put together make a classically nautical sounding name (at least I think so). So I went with Averyanne. Now Averyanne II.

My powerboat is a 1980 22' Boston Whaler we've had in our family since 1985. We used to throw our kids in the boat while it was on the trailer and the adults could socialize as a boat was a terrific baby sitter. We named it the Play Pen.

My Hunter 430 is the second sailboat I've owned, so I named her Second Wind.

A friend of mine in my marina resurected an old Cal ( I think it's about a 22 ft). His mom heard about it and came up with the name right away: "A fool and his money".

Great thread by the way!

OK, It's my turn.... After buying my 1st boat, nobody wanted to sail with me as a newcomer to the sport. Guess they didn't trust my ability. I named her "Corinthians 1:17" (I came not to baptize...) My second boat is named "Barely Awake" My wife picked it out. My 3rd boat is "Freedom" My wife after an argument said that the only thing she only wanted from me was "Freedom".... She doesn't like sailing (or me)...

Just after purchasing my first boat, a Hunter 336, I was sitting around with power boat friends and they were bragging abotu how quickly they could get from our marina to Put-in-Bay. It's a trip that would take me about 5-6 hours and they were laughing saying they could make it in 45 mintes in their 48ft Sea Ray. I reminded them that it was not in the destination it was in the journey. It hit me right when I said it that it would be the perfect name for my new boat, hence The Journey.

The name for my current boat, a Hunter 44, was just an extension of the first: The Journey continues...

We have been trying to think of a name for the dinghy, kind of a play on The Journey but haven't settled on anything yet. If anyone has any thoughts on a name for it....
a small journey would be a "trip";)

My son has already decided that our new dinghy will be named Swallows, from the book Swallows and Amazons. It is impossible to argue about that choice from a 6 year old. I wanted to name it Sea Snack. If we did have to ever ditch, that is about what we would be.
