My wife and I are both librarians.
No name on our boat, but we've considered these. Maybe folks here can tell us which one they like best:

Growing up (in Indiana) we always had ski boats, sunfish and other small (under 20') boats, none of them were named. Before moving out east, I owned a company by the name of "ForePoint Networks" (business partner came up with the name, no good story behind it), our customers always ended up referring to us as ForePoints.

I have always liked images of compass roses, there is just something about them that makes me dream of far away adventures at the 4 corners of the earth (and yearn to go sailing), so in homage to the company name that paid for the boat I combined the business name with the 4 points on the compass for the boat name of "FourPoints".

I just had new sails made for the boat, and instead of having the Hunter logo put on the new sail, I instead had a compass rose put on the sail, and had it rotated 13 degrees to match the magnetic deviation of where I sail.

Excellent! Pics when you get a chance! Would really love to see it.

Love the stories behind the little personal things that have special meaning too!

I took this Saturday (first time out with the new sails!!) on my phone. I included two progressivly zoomed in pictures in case it gets too compressed here and doesn't show up.

They messed up one thing though when putting the rose on. I wanted them to put the fleur de lis straight up to represent true north....

Hi Danny,

I read your article in Good 'Ol Boat. Nicely done. I recognized Olo and Ansty immediately.

Sparrow. Harmless enough. Our name is worth a few rolled eyes but for us it's fun and has some meaning. My sister bought a costume shop a few years ago and since I had a pathetic beard and brown eyes, I got drafted as Jack Sparrow, I mean CAPTAIN . . . Jack Sparrow. Then I built a parade float for her that resembles a pirate ship, with a working pneumatic cannon. With an arsenal like that, we were shoe-ins. She now has a slew of trophies adorning her shop, "Best Is Show", "First Place", "Second Place", "Most Original" and the list goes on. Oh, the things you can do as Capt'n Jack and the girls that adore you! It's a hoot! And all the little ones like pirates. So . . . as . . . juvenile as it might seem, Sparrow. And who (or what) was following close behind? Kraken . . . (It's a cephalopod actually). So. that's the dinghy.

So, if any of you folks happen by the Yarmouth Clam Festival, Boothbay Schooner Days, Balloon Festival, Moxie Day, to name a few, I was Hook and Cap'n Jack.

The boat I learned to sail on was my grandfathers. He was a WWII P-51 pilot and learned to sail after he got home on other people's boats. He didn't purchase his own (a Cape Dory 27) until later in life so it was aptly named "At Last" and his dink of course was named "At Least" :)
I named my Cat 25 "Gratitude" cause that's what I have when I'm on her and that's what I need to keep her.

Oday 22 Annapolis
I bought my O'day 22 from a cancer survivor who had aptly named it "Second Chances". The new name I chose, "Pelican" has two stories behind it. The first is to honor a very distant relative, Sir Francis Drake. Drake's famous ship was first named "Pelican" before he changed it to "Golden Hind". The second story is that I have a twin brother whose 22ft Marshall Cat boat is named "Peregrine" Two birds, two boats, two brothers. All similar, but not identical. I don't have a dinghy, but if I did it would be "Pelican Brief"

Wow! I bought a ODay 23 in 1998. Her Name "Affinity". Raising kids and watching Buzz Light year, I just told my boys it was the opposite of Infinity you know A-ffinity must be a finite point. This question above made me Google it up after loging many miles under her keel I was way off. Webster" A natural liking taste or inclanation towards a person or thing. Relation by marrage not by blood. (Wait till my wife hears this) I do so love the boat and my "Affinity For Barb".

My parents bought their first sailboat when they were 75. Their song was At Last so guess what they named their boat. It is a sweet C27 and fun to sail but she's rigged badly and we were just learning... We fell in love with sailing and ended up buying our own, a C30. We named her First Light because it was the name of a boat we'd researched and though we did not buy that boat, we really liked the name. Funny thing is, when we raced At Last we basically were always last...... One of the first really big races we entered with Luz (First Light) we came in first! So, I'm not saying it wasn't our extrordinary talent that got us that trophy but .. names might be really important!!:)

My first sail boat a Bristol 24 came with no name cause the PO had just refurb the whole boat with new paint, while going through some papers that he gave me months later I found the name Free Spirit penciled in on an old survey so I liked the name and wasn't about to do the name change thing so I ended up putting that name on the boat and when I bought my current Oday it had a horrible name that had something to do with the process of wine making so I thought it would be simple to carry on the name but on her maiden voyage we had a lot of laughs thinking of another and the one that always sticks in my head was my friend Francis telling me that I should change all the canvas from blue to black cause it looks better and I replied its staying blue and I'm gonna name the boat Blue by you or Blew by you

I like the tradition of naming your boat after your best girl. Since I was in between best girls when I got the boat I figured I'd better give her a name that has no attachments. I didn't want to have to explain anything to any future best girls. I don't know any Lorelie's and I've always liked the song from Paul Simon "Was A Sunny Day" so there ya go.

How about Steve Perry? (lead singer of Journey). Strange but some would get it!

I've owned 3 sailboats so far. We didn't name the laser, we called the Capri 16.5 Abby, after my grandmother, because the registration ended in ABY, but never had it printed/painted on the side.

Our Capri 22 came with the name Verboten German for Forbidden, which we kept. The PO's mother was German and the story goes that anything fun to do was "Verboten!" We kind of liked that and couldn't come up with anything better, so no changes. Also, depending on how you learned German, it kind of sounds like "fer boat'n"

Ours is the Lubberdink but not for the reasons most sailors would think. I found out we came from Holland in the 1600's to New Amsterdam and though we took the name of our home town (Borculo) according to the decree of Peter Stuyvesant, our family name and home was Lubberdinck so our first boat, a 16' Skipper Snipe was the Lubberdink and now that we've upgraded to our O'Day 20 it of course is the Lubberdink Twee (pronounced "tway"-Dutch for "two").
We had the Lub I painted professionally; the Lub II was done by my good wife.
