I'm rebuilding my M-15 and would really like to find someone who is re-engining and would like to sell the engine for parts. Thanks, Jim

I have 2 5411 engines for parts. Let me know what parts you need....

I need the exhaust flange for now.
I have low compression in number two cylinder and have tried to get new piston rings from the Kubota dealer. It seems that the parts people in the northeast don't have Z-500 as a cross reference to this engine anymore. The exhaust flange (new) has to be back ordered with a 4 to 6 week wait.
Anyone know which Kubota engine is a good reference these days?

I've learned at least three things on this rebuild from past mistakes (not all my own), so here goes:

1. Don't ever use reuse the head bolts, even if you have to hunt new ones down; you simply have a difficult time torquing them properly and will probably bust a few at the next head removal.

2. Use anti-seize on the bolts, even though it is stated in many blogs that this will throw off your torque readings slightly (delicate genius rule Costanza IMHO).

3. Liberally use permatex #2 when installing a new head gasket. It will make the old one easier to remove by far, and you may be able to salvage the old one the next time (got a quote of $78 on a new one).

Half way through the project..."Chimay", how may I reach you. Thanks, Jim

Just curious, considering the amount of corrosion from the diesel exhaust and seawater that mixes in the exhaust elbow, are U sure it's wise to reuse an older used exhaust part? If your current one is damaged from corrosion, won't the replacement used part of similar vintage also have the same level of corrosion? I would be weary of the threaded fitting stripping out when torqeing it onto the engine. But maybe the part is no longer available. My P.O. replaced my exhaust elbow with one made by Westerbeke which seems well built & a good fit. Perhaps I can read the part number for U next time I'm on my boat. -J Rowan

I took a shortcut when replacing the exhaust a few years ago (King Neptune hates shortcuts) and didn't replace the 4" piece coming out of the flange. Otherwise the flange would have been fine, had it not had a slow external leak rusting it away slowly.
Here's what a new one looks like; mine has one of the flange bolt holes totally gone.

I'm trying to get this show going and not await the part...which will probably have me in the water two months from now.
Does anyone know how I might send a private message to "Chimay" on this forum, as I am fairly forum-illiterate. :)

Thanks, Jim...I've pretty much have struck out with anyone having one in stock. If yours doesn't work out, then a machine shop would be the next step. I sent you a personal message yesterday with my phone number.
The rebuild is going well, except for the head bolts which broke off in the block. But for a 3000 hour engine, it looks like the piston rings and the exhaust flange may do the job. All the bearing surfaces look fine. Jim
