Has anyone had their mast powder coated?

I'm thinking about having it done to the C27. I was quoted $550.
How has it held up?
How has the slot worn? Do the slugs wear or cause it to chip?
Is the price about right? From what I've read about folks who paint their mast it sounds pretty reasonable factoring in cost of paint, not to mention labor.
Are there any down sides?

The big issue is how hot this place needs to get your mast and how they will support it as some of the ovens get in the 450 F range which is kind of hot for a mast

Unless they know how to deal with aluminum oxidation, it will fail quickly. No good way to repair either. I would use a 2 part finish like perfection. At least you can repair that when it oxidizes or gets scratched.

We use powder coating on a regular basis. Virtually all of our product is 6061-T6 or 6063-T6 with a little 6061-T52, just for the fun. In order for it to adhere properly, it must be cleaned properly. I believe it's actually an etching process. We warranty the finish for 5 years, but for a price, our finisher will go to 10 or 20 years. Our cost is about $4 per square foot, but we're buying over a million square feet per year, various colors, so we have a little pull on the wallet. Tim, didn't you do a bang-up job on your mast? With about 2" to spare at the walls? It seems to me that 1 quart of 2-part poly and a long Spring day would make more sense.

My powder coated radar mount lasted two seasons before beginning a rapid transition into bare, powdery aluminum. I'm glad it's up where it's hard to see.

A powder coated mast would be a nightmare.

Roger.... i am glad you posted this statement as was thinking about doing my pedistal and foward hatch along with some cleats...either powder coating or anodizing ...i got a quote for black anodizing for $125.00..... oh including the companionway slides.....so it will be anodized for sure now....its a no brainer:doh: again thanks

Roger, did they warantee the work? Who did the work? How was it prepared?

It was one of these out of the box coated by the factory.



BTW these mounts are too long for a Garmin 18 inch radar even though they were listed as the proper mount. I spend a season cursing my jib hanging up and moved the radome back 4 inches with an adapter made out of two aluminum flatbars.

Strength becomes an issue

There have been catastrophic powder coated aluminum SCUBA tank failures due to weakening of the alloy as a result of the heat required in the process.
