VC17

Best for fresh water, no build up. Contrarily to Interlus, it can last up to 3 seasons. For me anyways and I race every week. Use color that's different than your bearer coat so you'll know when to repaint.

The best thing to do before the 1st coat is sand the bearer very smooth, like 600-1500 grit paper. You'll gain 1/4 knots.

In the fall, just power wash the slime off.

VC17 evaporate very fast. The trick to put on VC17 is cold temperature and no wind. Use the brush to paint the hard to reach areas first. Don't dump the paint in the tray as it evaporates. Just use a brush to apply paint on to the roller and then roll on. Use a short (7 inches) roller as the boat bottom is curved.

You can do 32 feet boat with just 2 cans. We have been doing this for years in the great lakes.

Another trick is to get a water bottle from a bike shop, put the VC17 in that, then squirt it directly on the roller.

VC17 is fine for fresh water. The advantage is that it is easy to prep from year to year. I guess its not uncommon to go 2 years between paintings, but I would think that being out of the water between seasons would reduce the effectiveness of the product. Unfortunately, the stuff gets more expensive every year. Fortunately, I can cover the bottom with a little less than 3 quarts. I still choose do do mine annually at least until I have to get a mortgage to buy bottom paint.

My concern is that I may be moving my boat to Chesapeake Bay. That will bring a whole new set of issues into the equation. Might be a total bottom strip job. I never investigated whether VC Offshore could be applied directly over VC17. (That would be too easy...)

I agree with the fact that the material will evaporate unbelieveably fast is warm, breezy conditions. I do use a narrow roller and a small roller pan and I keep the pan covered loosely with foil to prevent evaporation. Others are very successful using the paint in a ketchup dispenser, squirting small amounts directly onto the roller.

...took me 32 hrs plus to get it that far on my S2...now i am sanding off the gelcoat or what ever it is called.....and am putting 6 to 7 coats of west system epoxy.barrier coat back on ...it takes me about 10 mins to sand with a air powered dynabraid 24 grit disk aprox 1.5 sq ft of that stuff......then on to fixing all the blisters i find....at this point there are about 75 or better about the size of a quarter.....then will be using trinadad bottom paint for final ...about 3 coats should do it......
