1978 Hunter 25 Main Sheet Location

So I recently picked up a Hunter 25, and after sailing it I noticed that the main sheet location is absolutely absurd. It runs from the back of the boom to the stern, and is very inconvenient to use. In any event, it is getting moved, and I would love suggestions as to where to put it. If anyone has pictures of their setup I would very much appreciate it. Thanks, -Jeff

And I think that I have seen the H25 without a traveler and on the very back of the coach roof. Like an inverted 'V' right over the companionway. I never saw one to the stern like yours. My old C-22 was like that and I sold the boat. Some of the larger Cherubinis including the 37 later went to mid-boom sheeting. Many owners have made that modification, several using Garhaurer towers and travelers. I prefer the sheeting in the cockpit near the end of the boom.

Two Variations Depending on Model Year?

I got curious about why the mainsheet configurations of your picture and that posted by Ed were so different. I went to Hunterowners.com (a subset of this website), went to boat info, 25, and then photo gallery. By the pics, it seems that earlier versions of the 25 had the end boom sheeting like yours. Later (1979+ ?) had mid boom to traveler in cockpit sheeting. I've noticed that the later model years have 4 small ports on each side. Earlier versions seemed to have 2 or 3 larger windows/ports. Below are urls to a few pictures from the photo gallery.

Also I've attached the Hunter 25 drawing page from the Cherubini Hunter instruction manual. This page shows 4 ports -- but end boom sheeting. So maybe there was a transition period, or a traveler in the cockpit was an option.

If you are inclined to make some modifications, you might want first to do some investigation/research if the the boom type and loose mainsail foot vs in track with slugs was the same type for both configurations. Stress characteristics of a modification from the original might be a consideration.

Hmm. I appreciate the reply. It is interesting that there are so many variations. I believe my boat has 3 ports on each side, end boom sheeting, and is the "deep" version drawing 3'11". You don't by chance have any other information by way of an owners manual do you? Does anyone? Given what I have seen, it seems mid-boom cockpit sheeting is the way to go. The end boom sheeting is just ridiculous.
