My '80 C 30 refit pics - what do ya think?

Just launched our new, old C-30 after a 2 month long refit.
Posted some before & afters - this boat had 6" of bottom paint above the original waterline, a worn engine, rigging, & interior that have all been redone. Tell me what you think, after my toils, trials, & tribulations,
was it worth it? I think so. These o'l Catalinas can reall shine after months of sanding, polishing, painiting, sewing, & emptying your wallet......Cheers.

Very nice Jeremy. Was the dinette originally a U shape or did you modify it yourself? What's underneath the forward seat?

Thanks guys, The U shaped dinette was original, I got lucky with that one. I use it for tool chest storage. But the coushions were either missing or shot (algae green isn't too nautical looking). I bought my wife a new sewing machine, so she made me new cushions for the cabin. Wallmart still has a few stores that sell some Sunbrella type outdoor fabric. I bought two bolts of it for under $200. Not a bad price compared to 2k + for pro cushions. The waterline & boot stripes are all painted, not just tape. After sanding through all the bottom paint covering them I found the original waterline. I think the P.O. may have had dingy davits, lowering the boat in the water 6" ! I couldn't stand the old barfy colored faded yellow stripes on her. Made her look so dated. I do love that fresh Catalina blue color. But I do still need to fix the depth sounder or likely replace it. Anyone familiar with the rotrary spinning "Sea Ranger" sounder? I hate those new 1" wide puck models hard to view, but may have to buy one.
I know my refit isn't up to your standards Ol' School Neal, but I've only been at it a few months. Cheers.

Now, now, don't go there. Your boat is looking fine.

If it makes you feel any better on the cushion deal, 5 years ago I was quoted $4500 from a pro shop for a full set. I had a suggestion for him he felt was rude.

Regarding the depth sounder, my boat came with a flasher like yours and I replaced it with a Raymarine ST50 I found on eBay. I connected the original shoot-though transducer from the flasher to the ST50 and it has worked great!

Nice job, enjoy...that rotary, does it look like a small paddlewheel?, I suspect it may be an old speed transducer. I inherited one on my boat, and installed a garmin transducer in the same 2" hole. Red

I'm jealous! You're back in the water! I like the blue boot stripes over the blue bottom. Nice looking combo.

Thanks again, I posted an album linked to my profile, just click on jrowan & you can see more if you like. The depth sounder is a flasher type, Neal. It has a red L.E.D. which flashes as it spins. I don't know why its not working, the readout looks o.k. & its hooked up to a newer transducer. But I did not hear any clicking from the transducer. Maybe the P.O.'s replacement sender is not a compatible one. I even took out the old analog gauge for a non working speed sensor (additional wheel transducer is bad) & replaced it with a Kenyon digital model, also only reads 0. I even have a thrid unit built into my Garmin 440s GPS. This one will only work if it is running over the stern transom directly into the water. It is supposed to work through the hull from inside the fiberglass, but I set it in a bag of water & still no reading. There is even & older model transducer in the bow set in a sealed bowl of mineral oil. I would like to cut a hole in the top of this dome with my dremel tool & stick the Garmin transduceer in there. I know it has to be in direct contact with either water or something solid, any voids & it won't work, but this is getting ridiculous. Maybe I'll have to break down & pay a pro electronics guy to intall it. That just makes me feel that I've failed my DIY determination!

Great work, really nice job!

I feel your pain on the transducer. I do all my own work as well and I tried every trick that everyone had to try to get a shoot through the hull transducer to work in my boat (oil, silicone, hair gel, bag of water!) and had very little luck. Finally hauled the boat, yanked out the old one, installed the new Garmin and put her back in the water. Ouch$. :)

A Ha, success!!! I finally got the Garmin unit to work through the method I had guessed at above - I cut a hole in the original mineral oil filled dome in the bow, pulled an old transducer out & stuck the new Garmin one attached to the GPS and voila, it finally worked! I think I may have had the unit pointed in the wrong direction the whole time - it pays to read the instructions. The "back" of the sounder looks like the front!
