Anybody for circumnavigation?

"Deep Water" is great. Talk about a case study in despair. I've spent some time alone backpacking in the Rockies (2 weeks) and did ok...if talking to yourself is ok ;-). I would like to try some longer solo passages some day and see how I respond.

Since I was a kid I wanted to "sail around the world." That dream is still in there somewhere but reality has a way of making you adopt lesser alternatives...which are still very satisfying.

Short answer, "Yep." I'd love to have the opportunity.

Tim R-Thanks for the link to "Deep Water". That is the movie I saw on IFC a few months ago. It was fascinating and I would recommend it to everyone here.

Also, thanks to Stu for identifying "Outerbridge Reach" for me. That is the one.

I would love to be able to circumnavigate the world... but unfortunately I' m still not allowed out of the shallow end of the pool.

Of course I dream about it but I'll probably never do it. Our goal is to sail out of the Great Lakes, down the coast, Caribbean, Panama Canal, Sea of Cortez, then up to Alaska stopping as often as we can to see and smell the roses (or lichen for that matter). If I still have an itch that needs scratching after all that, then maybe we'll tackle the rest of the world.

Just watched the movie "Deep Water" thanks to Tim and PotL. Life trumps fiction! You could not write a more unbelievable story. And some of the footage taken in heavy seas might change your mind about circumnavigation. Nine men started and one finished. A great documentary.

In doing the search for this thread I saw where Tim actually mentioned "A Voyage for Madmen" last year in the "required reading" post. Missed it then.

Ed, keep in mind that the point of the race was to go around AFAP. They did not have the luxury to wait for weather windows and they tended to sail in lower latitudes where getting around was a shorter distance. The latitudes that most circumnavigaters sail are much more benign given the proper weather window.

BTW, I think the race story would make a great movie if handled by the right people. I am still upset at the Hollywood butchering of "The Perfect Storm". It was too much to watch Markie Mark go up that giant wave!

Actually I have not only seen forty foot seas I have been in them. I crossed the pond four times, twice in the northern lats. Does it count that it was on an aircraft carrier? :)

Standing watch on the flight deck we would snap on to the pad eyes in the deck. Checking planes that were tied down on the flight deck the spray would come over and try to wash you over the side. But 100+ feet off the water we never appreciated what it might be like in a small boat. We should have though. In our trough we usually had a following destroyer. They would actually submerge where you could see nothing but antennas. Then suddenly a bow would appear. Wonder what it was like back there?!

My wife just rolls her eyes every time I suggest doing something like that. I always dream of it but like wanting to buy a motorcycle...it really will never happen. Besides, there's yard work to do and I have to weed the garden on the weekend...

Damn... I thought with a handle like DUCATI... you'd have to have a motorcycle.. but I feel your pain, my brother. and I admire you for establishing your priorities....

We tried it once. We sailed out the Strait of Juan de Fuca, turned left and shaped a course to San Francisco.......Then we remembered we had to go back and mow the lawn. Oh well, another time.
