Replace hull stripe w/rub rail

The pictures attached are probabably backwards. We went from a red hull stripe to Navy. We had ours done a couple years ago when we hauled out to do the bottom. We changed the boot stripe also....we had our boatyard painter do the stripe and we are really really happy with it. We changed out our rub rail ourselves, it was easy, and it made a big difference too.

Besides hull stripe, did you know that it is also called the SHEER line or stripe? Probably because it highlights the line created by the hull/deck joint (which is, of course, the "sheer" )
In addition, the line that is painted along the boat's water line is called the "boot top"... although I've always called it the boot stripe.

I have seen it done on a Cherubini Bill but cannot remember where. Some kind of wood with a stainless rub strake. Cannot imagine how that wood was attached to the hull. It was at least one inch deep, about 1/2" on the outside edge and at least 1 and 1/2 where it was attached to the hull. Maybe that person will see this and post pictures. It would be a major project.

I actually googled the name "hull stripe" because I didn't want to get it wrong ... oops! I think I have said in the past, I love sailing but the language is killing me! ok then... hrumph... we had our sheer line removed and then painted on and it is beautiful. We had the boot top repainted in navy as well.
I need to find myself a good (small) sailing glossary to carry around with me...
I changed to a common 3M multi-stripe tape some years ago. I was having the topsides repaired and compounded. So I removed the original stripe and then paid to have the new stripes installed. I tried a section and just could not get it straight, even with a blue tape spacer between the toerail and the top of the stripe. In the picture you see the five stripes I was trying for. Before I turned it over to a pro I sawed the smaller two stripes from the bottom of the roll.

That's a damn good idea.... actually they should post one here. It is an ongoing process to learn the language of sailboats.... I remember how hard it was to remember which side was port and starboard.
I have learned this..... do not try to teach your non-sailing guests the entire sailing glossary... it will bore and/or confuse the be-jesus out of them. When I take newbies out now I say right .. left... front ... back... side... rope... etc... that's why I like solid color lines... 'cause you can just say... pull on that red thingy till I say stop!
