What's this stuff called?

At the cross over point on a wire to rope halyard there is the stuff coating the rope portion. It is translucent pale yellow, flexible and slightly sticky. I would guess that it prevents the rope from unraveling. Does anyone know what this stuff is called and where it can be purchased? Thanks.

I'm not sure what this is, but here's a personal experience. Some 25 yrs ago, I had an S2 36 and I went up the mast in the chair for some reason. After I got down, I slid the headsail into the furler track and started hoisting. About half way up it came crashing down and the rope-wire splice had failed. I got rid of the three similar halyards and went all rope. Fast forward 25 yrs, I just bought a sistership which has not been used and all those halyards are there. Getting rid of the them......

Had lots of wire to rope halyards and have never seen this.

we had a talk about this about 6 weeks ago.....what i learned from that talk was that back then the lines were not as stretch free as they are to day and that is why they used wire to rope halyards back then but the new rope is much better in this day and age so i am replacing all mine with rope only ....one thing if you change make sure you check your mast head shives they may be worn to much to put new ropes on if that is the case just replace the shives as well ....i do like the idea of not have wire and rope in the mix.....

I have a rope/wire halyard on my genny and have had to dampen the slapping on the mast when the wind pipes up. The PO must have bought it new cause it was in good shape. slightly off topic, but wire vs line halyards

Personally, I'm sick of huge coils of line halyards hanging on my mast winches.
I can see absolutely NO reason to have the combination halyards on any vessel which has roller furling sails which stay up for the season or longer.
What happened to the wonderful, self-contained wire halyard winches which we had on every boat over 30 feet in the 60's & 70's?
No clutter; no mess; no splices.
I have been searching unsuccessfully for several years to find three of the old wire halyard winches suitable for my Pearson 530.
