I am planning a sail in the Grenadines. I have a Garmin 76 Cx GPS. I believe it takes only Blue Charts, but not the g2 series. Is there any service or person who rents their chart chip for this area. I am too cheap to buy the chip for a week's sail.

I've never heard of a blue chart rental service but I'd be pleasantly surprised if there were. Are you chartering in the area? If so, I thought the charter company would include navigation tools.

The charter company does but I wanted to pre-load my own GPS with some info if possible.

find out what kind of equipment they have, take a data cord and download the waypoints onto your garmin unit.

I sailed the Grenepadines last year and you really do not need a chart plotter. Paper charts and a gps should do fine. The cruising guides have waypoints.

My GPS is chipply challenged but when I was reading up on them, one fellow sort of bragged how he had purchased the chips for several areas on Ebay for as little a $25. That said, if it's a real issue, buy it new and sell it for a reasonable price (not as low as $25) after your return.

Hey Tim, where are the "Grenepadines"? Someplace past Bah Hah-bah I guess?

I am planning a trip south from Hilton Head to Port Richie, FL. My older style Garman GPS takes the G2 chip chats - to get the complete set of required charts is crazy, not to mention costly. I was wondering if I am going about this all wrong.

I just recently bought a CPSMAP 76CX, and it came with the bluechart g2 micro sd card. It works great. I also saw where Garmin and Google have hooked up so you can download a Google map to your gps, though I haven't played with it enough to do that yet. You might want to call Garmin and ask them.
