Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of the Britton Chance 33-30. I know Allied made a 30-30, but this is a different boat, made in Germany. I have the opportunity to get a good deal on one. I have read that Chance had a varied career in racing design with mixed results, some good, others not so good. The present owner states that since she is IOR rated, she is an ocean going boat. I am doubtful as to the validity of that claim.

I am familiar with the Chance 30-30 built by Allied and Jon Eisberg who frequents the CS-BB forum owns and cruises one very extensively.

The 30-30 is a well found boat and they are built rather tank like. Sorry I can't comment on the 33-30 but Jon might know more about them. CS-BB (LINK) (just be aware the crowd over on CS-BB is a little cantankerous but in the end knowledgeable)

As a general rule, old IOR boats and especially ones of that vintage are not very user friendly. Many of the compromises in rigging and hull shape that were done to make them rate better under the rule, made them unpleasant (and often unsafe) boats to sail in heavy weather without a lot of trained crew. That boat in particular had some very funny hull shapes and as I recall the only person who every had much sucess racing that boat was Britton Chance.
The IOR was a racing "rating rule" first and foremost so being built to the IOR really doesn't tell you much about the quality or ruggedness of the boat. I believe most of the boats in the ill fated Fastnet race were IOR boats.

Alex,

I suspect Jon Eisberg may disagree with you generalizations of the Chance boats. He's sailed his ten of thousands of offshore miles though all kinds of weather and as a professional delivery skipper who's done the NE to Florida over 200 times he has sailed lots of different boats but makes the 30-30 his own personal choice.

Following Jon's adventures on Chancy for many years is simply amazing, the boat is a tank and has taken tons of abuse. Again, can't comment on the 33-30 but the 30-30 does not fit your generalization well.

He sails her hard: Photo's below linked to from Jon Eisberg

He's also had to raise the waterline a bit:

He even sails her in the middle of winter, note the ice on deck:

Chancy has been all over from high latitudes to the equator and beyond:

I was not commenting on the build quality of your friends 30-30 or would I dispute that he enjoys cruising his. I was however commenting on the short hand cruising suitability of old IOR boats in general and the spotty racing history of Chance boats in particular.
I sailed on some of these boats back in the 80's and used to sell boat equipment to Britton Chance.

uploaded photos

I have uploaded some photos of the boat in question. It is very attractive and has a very nice cabin. I can get her for next to nothing and am not sure how much cruising I will be doing. I am an intermediate sailor and would like the thrill of a fast boat, but not too many surprises. The other boat available to me in good shape at a good price is an Endeavor 32. Very dissimilar boats. I have no doubt that the Endeavor will be tame, but think it may bore me. My concern is whether this stern will make her too unstable and if I am biting more than I can handle. The boat was made in Germany and appears to be very well built.

More photos of my next dreamboat

I have included more photos. I am sorry that I didn't get a full frame of whole boat. I hope that the details can give you a good impression of the important design parts. quality and condition. I am not looking for a boat to cross oceans in, but would like to do some coastal cruising. I have only sailed cruiser racers that were more cruisers than racers. If and when I want a liveaboard cruiser that can handle really tough weather, i may go to a modified full keel or maybe an Islander 36. Like I said, i can get this boat for a song, but I think I could sell it when that time comes for a bit more. Does anyone have an idea of what a fair price for this boat would be?

I haven't been bored yet.

And that's not the half of it.

Driest boat I've ever sailed. Nimble and responsive when you want her to be but with a solid and reassuring motion. I'd put her up against the Chance on a reach although she won't go to windward as well. The shoal draft is great for exploring and just right for the ICW. Great under power. Great boat single or short handed as long as you add a vane gear. The 33-30 would need one even more.
