I am all set up to remove rust from the transom of my boat this week using Oxalic Acid, then a cutting compound followed by a finishing compound to seal the fibreglass off.

In order to throw me into a spin, this afternoon, a friend told me I am mad and should be using Rust Converter - he said he has used it very successfully on large fibreglass vats in a fish factory.

The only rust converter I have at home is an old bottle of a very dark blackish/brown liquid and the way it stains my fingers there is no way I would be using that on my fibreglass boat. My friend said the product he uses is almost clear or translucent with a slight greenish tinge.

Has anyone had experience using rust converter on fibreglass or heard anything about others using it?

Most any "rust remover" has an acid as the main ingredient. Oxalic acid will work fine on gelcoat but extreme caution should be used on any painted surface...
