Those of you whose favorite TV program is “Hoarders”, take heart.

In 1978, I heard a cute girl say she wanted to learn how to sail. I ran right out and bought an old Mirror dinghy and told her I would teach her. She said, “In your dreams.”

I gave the boat to my family where it sailed on a lake until rotting out and taking a last ride to the dump. The spinnaker pole has followed me around for decades like a lost kitten. Countless times as I’ve sorted, cleaned shops, downsized, and moved, I’ve held it in my hands and almost sent it off to a new life as beer cans but always kept it.

The builders of my mast took the crazy shortcut of drilling the upper mast tang hole to the size of the compression tube so it could just be inserted from the outside like a bushing instead of acting like a proper compression tube. I just went down to measure the tube so as to order a larger tube to take the compression. I looked over, saw the spinnaker pole in the junk pile, pulled the end off, and what do you know? It is an almost perfect fit. About 30 bucks saved just by carrying this spinnaker pole around for 32 years and a half dozen moves.

I'm with you Roger. Two weekends ago I was cleaning out my basement. A collection of old sailboat parts that nobody would ever want was tossed into the garbage can. At the end of the day I removed one of the items and snapped a few photos of it and put it on Ebay just for fun. I started the bidding at $20 and I really didn't expect to sell it. One week later I'm $150 richer. Now I can justify to my wife why I never throw anything out. :)

Roger, just out of curiosity, where did you find an old mirror dinghy. They are not very common in the US. My father was one of five that were the first five kits imported in the early seventies. He and 4 friends got together to have them all shipped together.

There was a whole fleet in Woods Hole back in the 70's. There must have been a dozen pulled up on the beach where I kept my dinghy to get out to my houseboat.

3 of the 5 guys my dad teamed up with were from MA. And I think it was 71 when they shipped them in.

It may have been worth a buck a year not to deal with all the junk hanging around.

I used to keep everything but when we sold the house and moved aboard, it all got sold or tossed.

I'm going through that now. I rented a storage unit because I can't throw out all the plans and files that were my life's work. My son helped me move them from my ex.'s house into the storage unit. I told him, "You know who's going to empty this thing out don't you?"

Three more months and I'll be pretty much living aboard myself.

My girlfriend has watched Hoarders since it began its run. She now throws out something every day!

Our yacht club used to have a white elephant auction for charity. Somebody can always use what ya don't need anymore. At least they think they can until it showed up at the next auction. My wife installed a plaque in our cabin which states "Like a woman, the rigging costs more than the hull." Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Can we make this thread more productive? If you made junk into treasure share your idea here, Any suggestions what to do with that triple rope clutch block with on line busted? You can't separate them into singles :( Any suggestions?

Cleaning House (and Garage)

Just got rid of three things in the past week:
Audi shop manual set $75
iSight web cam $25
Signet SL-40 depth sounder, $150 (new - unused - but old)

Even got rid of the pictures I took (i.e., deleted them) to sell them!

Turned the dining room table into a product set-up photo station. My wife loves it. (ha ha) Well, she loves me getting rid of the stuff and turning it into money.

Just bite the bullet and start doing it. I'm on a roll.
