catalina 310 charlottes cove tasmania
Hi everyone, We have recently purchased a 2004 catalina 310 and have sailed it across Bass Strait to our home in Charlottes cove which is situated on the huon river south of Hobart,Tasmania.
we love this boat but have had a problem with leaking windows, which have almost fallen out.
Has anyone had a similar problem and if so what type of sealant did you use.cheers

The windows above the stove on the starboard side and head sink on the port side typically leak. Above, the connections from the hand railing to the deck are usually the culprit.
Unfortunately there does not appear anyway to access the bolts that hold them in place, so re-bedding them is not practical (correct me if i'm wrong). I just ran a bead of cauk around the handrail base, but will have to keep after it.

Leaking windows

Thanks for your reply Witzend, but the real problem is that the acrylic window is actually loose on one end and you can see daylight through the crack.
I,m worried that one day that these windows will fall out.
I have resealed one window by removing it completely and sealed it with sikaflex, but its a terrible job to do,without making a mess of the whole thing.
Before i try and repair the leaking window,i just wondered if anyone had found an easier way and what sealants were used.
cheers from downunder

I have had good success with contacting Catalina directly by phone. For you I think Email would suffice with some pictures. They have been good to me on support issues and I bet since they put it together they might have a good suggestion for a fix. For the 310 Catalina Florida offers support. 727.544.6681 don't have their email in front of me, but should be a click away. Good luck.

No Joy with Catalina?

Hi curlew
A few years ago I had two of these one piece plastic windows leak on an older Catalina. Just a drip during rain. Was afraid of breaking the panes getting them out, so had the yard do it. They had to use a length of piano wire (would not have occurred to me) threaded through the leaking area and then pulled around the edge to get the old adhesive to let go.
They used a two part adhesive, primer and then glue, to reseal the windows. There was no mess as one would expect with a polysulfide sealant. Can't recall name of the product, but they said it was specifically made for this job.
Work was done at Shrutz Marine in Olympia, WA. 866 753-7597
Russ and Jeff Shurtz own the place and are pretty easy to talk to.
Googling Shurtz Marine will get you their website and email.
Just another idea in case you flame out with Catalina.
Good luck
Jack

Could you share what Catalina said to do to correct the leak?
Thanks

Good Luck with THAT!

Oh....My.
Silicone? ....Really?
Would love to see a picture of the 2x4 weighed with lead and somehow braced against the window and deck.
Here's how Catalina did it in the late 80s. The Frankensteinish presence of the screws might not fit well with the Hunteresq appearance of the Mark II line.
Where's truckman when you need him?
Good luck.
Jack

Probably why these windows are starting to fail, nothing but silicone.

Tend to agree with you guys. I have just completed replacing the window .I did follow Catalinas instructions tho except I could not locate Dow corning 795 sealant,so with lots of masking tape and care I used sikaflex 295 sealant and cleaned up with sika cleaner 208.
I did use the lead weight Jack and also a length of thin timber wedged between the sail track and tied to the hand rail. the clean up took a while, but the finished job looks like a factory finish thank goodness.
Thanks everyone for your input ans interest.
cheers for now
