Have you seen the price for gas and diesel lately? It is supposed to go up even more by the summer!

If you think its bad in the U.S. try here in Canada. $1.22 per liter for diesel and $1.23 per liter for gasoline. If you want the conversion 3.8 liters to 1 US gallon. Only thing thats keeping us from really paying through the nose is our dollar. Like you said, glad I have a sailboat.
I remember a trip where I had excellent wind. I had a three day sail and went from Colonial Beach to Hampton. When I got to Hampton I went to the fuel dock to top off. There were two power boaters there that were complaining about the price of fuel (this was when fuel was at its highest point). They said that they are putting $300 a day into their boats and maybe doing 50 nauticle miles. When they saw that I put 4 gallons of diesel into my boat they asked where I came from and I told them that I had only used 4 gallons and I had come 50 nauticle miles are better from my dock. I will never forget the look on their faces!!!!!
Yes the fuel mileage is great with the little diesel in a sailboat, but a new sail for my boat is $3000-$5000. Powerboaters don't need to purchase sails. It sort of balances out... boating is expensive and we do it 'cause we love it.
I can't wait for spring either. I have new halyards to put on, a new macerator pump to put on, and a few other projects. Going to take a nice trip up to Solomons Island for my Honeymoon and staying at a nice B&B.

Good point. Even if diesel reaches $4.50 a gallon, the cost of my standing rigging replacement would take me over 6000 miles under power. By that time, I'll probably need new standing rigging and new sails. Of course, most powerboaters wouldn't be satisfied going 6 knots.
This is one of the reasons I don't get very excited about commercial sail cargo on strictly economic grounds.
New rigging for a 35-37' B/R rig is about $2,000 shipped.
New sails for one of thee boats about $2,500 for a main and $2,000 for a jib.
This is once every 10-15 years. That power boat would run for about 22 days at $300/day on fuel. I guess the powerboater can use their boat about 2 days a year based on these numbers.

Jus remeember....Unlike a power boat. When we step on board, we have already arrived at our destination.

Our marina here in NE Washington State would really rather not rent slips to sailboats. Until they are sure there are no more powerboats seeking slips they won't take sailors. We buy little fuel from them at $4.50 to $5.00 a gallon and that is a big money maker after slip rental.

I love walking down the dock past my power boat neighbors that don't leave the dock with a couple of containers of diesel fuel to top off the tank at the end of the season and then the big question is asked "how much fuel did you use this season" and my answer is usually about 50 gal.s and we use the boat every weekend and a two week vacation somewhere.
Just got a 100 gallons delivery of heating fuel this morning @ 3.75 a gallon......so glad winter is almost gone

All of you do realize that gasoline and diesel prices are about the same everywhere in the world and the differences that you see at the pump are primarily due to the taxes levied by the states and federal governments, don't you?

Tough on Snowbirds
Really feeling for the snowbirds about now. Some have started already, but the majority will be starting their migration northward (read motoring) from FL and points south. We experienced the price explosion back in 2008. It wasn't pleasant paying $4+ for diesel along the ICW. Kinda put a big dent in the cruising kitty. On the bright side, at least the fuel dock guy didn't have to stop and reset the pump when it reached $999 and start again when we filled our tank. Saw lots of powerboaters just shaking their heads and moaning.:cry:
