It's been a long road, but I've finally started putting more stuff back onto my boat. My wife has been threatening to destroy the boat if I didn't get it in the water this year. When I saw her gassing up the chainsaw, I figured I'd better get moving again. Anyway, I had to make several repairs to holes and cracks in the nonskid areas so many places were flattened out. I had originally bought some nonskid paint from Interlux, but it did me absolutely no good since the nonskid was so inconsistent. I'm sure it's fine for redoing old but good nonskid. Well, I ordered a gallon of Kiwi Grip and slapped some on the seats of my 222 today. It went on much easier than I expected. It's still drying right now, so I can't give any reviews on the performance, but everything you've read about the application and looks are accurate. By the way, it looks and smells exactly like some of the premixed tile thinsets I've used. Maybe a little thinner. I looked up the MSDS on both and there are some similarities. Hmm...

Yeah, it's coming along finally. Got a little burned out, life got in the way several times, too. I just about have all of the deck done with paint. I have a little more white paint to slap down and then kiwigrip on about 50% of the nonskid still. I started drying in the boat yesterday.

Oh yeah, if you do go with kiwigrip, don't get greedy when applying in in the sun! Yesterday the temps were perfect 70-75. I applied the goop to 2 sections and started pulling the tape off. The edges had already started to dry in the 10 minutes or so that it took me to finish those sections. Definitely should have done one section at a time and I would've been fine. Right after that I did 2 sections on either side of the boat. One was in the sun, the other the shade (around 3pm). Still warm. After half an hour, the one in the sun was nearly dry to the touch. The other side was just as wet as when I put it down. Checked it again last night and it was still wet. Still wet this morning, dew had settled down, plus a lot of bugs. It finally setup but I'll need to clean it up a little and touch it up. I also noticed a few holidays in a couple of sections but this stuff touches up really well. And it does splatter, no matter how slowly you go with the roller.

Remember - It doesn't have to be perfect to splash. If that was the criterion, I wouldn't have sailed mine the last 10 years. Get that puppy in the water and enjoy your boat. Life is too short to wait. Oh, and keep your wife away from that chainsaw.

Remember - It doesn't have to be perfect to splash. If that was the criterion, I wouldn't have sailed mine the last 10 years. Get that puppy in the water and enjoy your boat. Life is too short to wait. Oh, and keep your wife away from that chainsaw.

It's tough sometimes to get it in my head I'm not building a piano. That's part of what burned me out so bad is I did the topsides first, in dark blue paint. In case you didn't know, dark paint shows every flaw. 75% of the boat looked good, but I couldn't move past that 25%. The white paint on the deck still has flaws, but from 5 feet away you don't see them. I've also had more practice with rolling and tipping. I think I'll be ready to go again with the topsides soon. I've also started adding things like the winches, hatch, windows, and "teak" (using ipe). It's starting to look like a boat again!

I wouldn't worry about things like that. You should see the hull and deck on my boat. There's more battle scars on that boat than you can shake a stick at. I still haven't tried to color in the screw holes with gel coat that I filled in on the deck and I really don't care. At this point in my life I just want to get out in May and use my boat. The other stuff that needs doing, I can do later when I feel like it.
Last year, I hit a red nun on the river. Like a dumbbell, I was in the cabin washing dishes or something with my autopilot steering the boat. It didn't do any damage to my boat, but I think my bow pulpit or anchor roller hit it. Later on I noticed that a pull over jacket that I had stowed up in the bow was soaking wet after a rain. That hit probably disturbed something and I'm going to need to remove my pulpit or anchor roller and re caulk it. Now,--that's important as far as I'm concerned and I'm going to address that as soon as possible when I uncover my boat. I'm going to touch up the bottom paint in a few weeks and put everything back together. The gel coat touch up can wait. Good Luck 48!
