Grounded for 24 hours

Hey everybody. Thanks for all the help. I am still concerned about the wood rot. I did get the motor to run pretty good all weekend. But then....I sailed into a sandbar and was stuck for 24 hours. It was an adventure like no other that I have had before. It gave me a good chance to scrape off the huge reef system growing on my boat. I am planning on selling the boat now because I want something I can take in shallow water. Imagine that.

Cannot believe that boat would balance on its keel! You sure that's not some Photo Shop work? You already have a shallow draft. I guess you'll have to put a sail on a johnboat. I sailed my H37C around there without sticking it on anything.

Bananaboat I can't think of any keel boat that is more shallow then the h23 at 2' 3"

I think those pics are perfect illustrations of how the '23 can be supported just by the keel when on the trailer and if balanced safely the bunks can be lowered when painting.

Still, I'm amazed at how its balanced.

"on display" You know nobody's moving around in there until it gets some water under it.

For a guy unlucky enough to go that hard aground the weather Gods showed some serious mercy with no wind/waves and a beautiful sunset, hence the happy smile. I know that grass flat and it's huge and really exposed with a pretty good fetch. Glad it was a gentle learning experience. Now go buy a chart.....that flat's on there. Luck and Poseidons mercy will wear off eventually.

Nice! Seriously that's pretty impressive.

Since buying my first 'big' boat (H22) last year I've gone aground twice. We got some nice mud banks here in TN and when the water's down low... let's just say I seem intent on locating each one. Doesn't help that my depth finder both times said I was in 3'. More like 6''.

I'm planning on buying a Macgregor 26S once the wife lets me. The swing keel on that one goes all the way up into the centerboard trunk - not exposed 1' like on the H22. I also figure water ballast system will be useful for getting off anything I get stuck on, assuming it puts the tank level higher than the surrounding water level.

For you die-hard Hunter fans, yes I would consider the H23.5 or H26, but I can get into the M26S for much much less. The aforementioned wife letting me issue comes into play here...

Just saw Catinlina 22 aground like that here in panama city next to a local pub.
Charts are your best defense againest running aground no matter what keel you have. A depth finder is a great help but not a cure all against running aground. Also there are those who have and those who will run aground and those that lie about it.
