I'm looking to purchase a late 80s C30. I found one that I really like, but according to the owner, she doesn't have any spinnaker tackle. This is a deal breaker for me as I have hopes of taking club championship one day in our PHRF fleet :)

My question is.. Are there any pitfalls of trying to add it once purchased? Is there a location on the mast head to put a block?

OR

should I walk away and find one that does.

I had a block, but found a asymetrical at Bacon's.

Mention my name, they won't know who you're talking about. :D:D

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Hrm....hopefully you have a tall rig fin keel if you are going to race it. If you have a wing keel you will be hating the beating portions of the course.

You can add the spinnaker gear relatively easy. Most Catalina 30s aren't raced and don't usually have spinnaker gear.

bigpic..+1 on what B.O. said. The best performing C-30 comes from the tall rig/fin keel combo. The wing keel would be a deal breaker for me, but, I can add spin gear to any boat.
Here is a short shopping list:

  • ~$400-500 for a spin pole
  • you need a spin halyard (I also have the CD crane, however, my boat came rigged with a block simply pinned thru the end of the existing masthead casting..there is an extra hole out there forward of the headstay and that worked fine for years..)
  • you need to add a topping lift. my boat has an eye/block bolted a few feet above the spreaders.
  • extra set of turning blocks in the back of the boat, near where the lifelines end/pulpit starts.

  • you also need a downhaul/foreguy..I am simple and try to keep my boat simple..a block pinned to the bow stem works OK. Most people bolt something thru the deck in the middle so it is easier to end for end the jibes.
  • spin sheets. I would make them 65' long each. That is a little overkill, but having them too short is worse.
  • A track on the mast with a car for the pole.
  • Oh, and a spinnaker of course. $1600??? :D
There is your simplified shopping list if the boat doesn't have spin gear..that will at least help you determine a cost guesstimate for the upgrade..off the top of my head, that is maybe $850 for the gear, not including the sail?

It's just as easy to add spinnaker gear to a C22 as it is to any other boat. I would think that the price of the boat reflects the absence of that gear. If the boat, other gear and condition of the sails are all in good, or better condition then I wouldn't walk over something so easly corrected.
If you plan to race you'll also benefit form a fully battened loose footed main. That sail made my C22 really step out. This site or Catalina Direct are good sources for this gear.
