Let's be fair, I've seen a few sailboat disasters too. What really concerned me were the people swimming in the current and trying to swim against it. This is pretty much impossible. Champion swimmers swim 100 yards in maybe 45 seconds. That is 4.63 miles per hour. An average swimmer is maybe swimming 2 miles an hour as fast as they can swim. There is no way to swim against a couple knot current, that is why riptides are so dangerous.

This was at Fire Island Inlet and in that area the current runs about 5 knots.....we anchored there this summer and I did not like it one bit cause the wind was from one direction and the current from another I decided not to spend the night there

I rarely see them docking. I just know that they've always taken all the docks before I get there. :)

They sleep later in the AM and start drinking at the dock while we are doing our cocktails on the water.

This really isn't fair to display all power boaters as idiots. I personally know one who isn't that dumb.

If I had to guess I'd say 'Toe Nail Cove' or is it 'Thumb Nail Cove' in Fire Island Inlet. The accents heard are quite appropriate. "Oh my Gawwd!"
Could be somewheauh in Joisey too.

No, I agree its Fire Island. You can see the Robert Moses Bridge in the background and , I think, the Fire Island Light in some of the video. Maybe the so called sore thumb. I believe the video is mostly looking SE.
As for the folks involved ...well different strokes for different folks. We raft up almost every Sunday during the season. We dink, we swim, we visit and we enjoy. So far we haven't drifted away..... so far.

If you look at the picture in the link in the upper right side there are a couple of boats.....this area called Sore Thumb is a favorite anchorage on the weekends

Not sure what the swimmers where thinking they could do. Tow a boat???, push 6-10 boats off the shore???? Makes no sense to get in the water with all that going on. and in a rip current to boot.
I did note that the girls just walked over to where the action was taking place. Very sensible. Testosterone poisoning is a terrible thing.

Do you think the incidence of testosterone poisoning is higher among power boaters or sail boaters?

How many thousands of horse power do you think all these boats would add up too. There were people aboard "most" of the boats in the video. A few quick boat hops to untie/retrieve some extremely short anchor rodes that were not set anyway, and then one or two big engines fire up and moves the bunch out of danger.

Only problem is that this would take a certain amount of quick thinking and coordination and depending on the time of day, the alcohol may have removed this possibility.

It would be interesting to see how the ones that came in contact with each other explain the situation to the insurance company.

One of the problems in this area is the strong current that runs along the shore so you could set your anchor and be pointing into the prevailing SW wind then the tide comes in or out swinging the boats the direction of the current and then ya gotta hope the anchor holds.
A few years back friends had anchored there and were on shore when the anchor dragged so he try's to swim out rather than row the dink cause he couldn't start the engine and he's lucky to still be with us today
