Is 19hp on Hunter 33 (2005) too small?

I am considering to buy a Hunter possibly 33-36, 2000+. In the adds I found that some 33s have only 19hp Yanmar, while other have upgraded 29 hp engines. I am planning to keep sailing on Georgian Bay, typically weekend and week-long cruising.
Looking for advice whether 19hp would or would not be sufficient.

Thanks in advance

Tomek, We have a 1990 hunter 33.5 with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine (18/19 Hp) and it is marginally adequate. You cannot quite get it up to 'hull speed' with the engine alone, but close. In the following hunter put in the 3GM27F engine (27/29 Hp) which was an improvement. I haven't really been unhappy with the 2GM20F, it's a really great engine. It has a consumption of 0.3 to 0.45 GPH depending on how 'coked up' the mixing elbow gets.

I believe that the "rule of thumb" is approx. 1hp for every 500 lbs of weight.

i.e.: 15,000 lbs = 30 HP engine.

I've an 18HP 2GM20F on my H326 whereas my friend has his H33 upgraded with a 29HP 3YM30 and he's happy about it. I must say the 18HP on my 326 is adequate but several ocassion I do wish for a few more horses.

The 29hp engine on the 33 (2004 and later model) was always part of the "Mariner Package" and could be ordered individually as an upgrade for about $600 as I recall. The mariner Package also gave you in mast furling, helm sheeting winches and refrigeration among other things. As such, almost all the 33's ended up with the bigger engine. It was sort of a no brainer. In addition to moving the boat very well, the 3 cylinder is a fair bit smoother running with a lot less vibration.

Tomek, you're in Penetanguishene ??? go figure. We're at BayMoorings.

As above the 29hp came as part of the Mariner package which most in this area seem to have. Where have you been looking.

We've done 4 seasons on Georgian Bay with ours. The 29 wil easily get 6.5 knots at cruising speed, not sure what you'd get on the 19. The 19 might be fine for getting out and back into the marina, but in our area we tend to motor quite often. I seldom will put the sails out until I get to Outer Penetang Harbour and often will motor up past the "Slot" on the west side of Beausoliel to avoid tacking back and forth dodging the powerboats.

We've taken 1 week, 1 1/2 weeks and 2 week trips up to the Bustards and Baie Fine. With wind and weather conditions we motored as much as we sailied. Can't imagine how much longer it would take with a smaller engine.

Also, make sure if you look pre mid 2005 that the heat exchanger has been replaced. The 3YM30 had an overheating problem ( I did on ours ) and Yanmar replaced with a bigger heat exchanger.

Maybe you could buy our 33 and we could get that new H39 we saw at the boat show. :)

Let me know if you have any more questions, more than happy to help.

Small world. My dockmates of many years retired and went home to Canada. Built a new home near Pentang. Watch for Ann and Garry VanGelderen on Andantino, a Westerly 32.

Thanks, Steve,
According to the rule you gave, Hunter 33 2005 is 11,000 lbs =>22 hp. This would agree with what Navigator97 posted: marginally adequate.

Thank you all for your replies. It seems that general consensus is that 19hp may just be enough, but really 29hp is the way to go.

Hi Scott:
I am currently in Hindson Marine. I have a Cal 25, and want to upgrade a little. If you really consider selling your 33, send me an e-mail to tomek_d at sympatico.ca, with more details

Hi Scott:

Just for my curiosity, was the picture attached to your post taken at the entrance to Longuisa?

The large picture? that's Baie Fine, just north of Killarney. The small pic under my name is Lost Bay on the North end of Beausoliel, just in the Minicog Chanel.

Hi Scott:

I have not yet been to Baie Fine so I could not have recognized it. Perhaps when I get the new bigger boat :).
How about my other question? Do you really think of selling? If you send me an e-mail please make sure to transcribe my e-address from the previous post, if you copy and paste it, it will not be valid. I did that to avoid lots of junk mail sent by automated mailers to addresses posted on web.
