Merry Xmas

I hope all listers on the sail trim forum have a great Xmas and New year. We are in So Ca, about 500 miles from Tucson. We arrived in San Diego on Monday in our land yacht to the worst 3 days of weather I've ever seen in So Ca and I lived here since 1970. It was near impossible to get out of the motor home and now I know how live-aboards feel. The ski areas in No Ca received over 16' of snow.

Nothing has changed much in So Ca since I was last here over 6 years ago except there are MORE people, which is the reason we left. The traffic is awful and goes on forever. In Tucson, if there are more than 5 cars at a traffic light folks think it ia a major traffic jam.

welcome to san diego-today you have beauty--- is a goodthing. we had the nastiest 4-5 days of ick -- cold and wet and bouncy!-- everyone here knows EXACTLY where the leaks are by now--is time for the repairing weather to come. MERRY CHRISTMAS-- we have SUN for the moment to celebrate with!!!!

What is the "sail trim forum"? Ho, ho, ho. Just kidding Don. I want to write "Merry Christmas" but sounds like you want to be back home in Tucson. Spent time in San Diego in the '80s and it was crowed then. Amazing that they were able to play that bowl game after all that rain. My Navy team wishes that they hadn't. So now in Arizona, where do you sail? I love Tucson, use to spend time at IBM there. But never looked for a place to sail.

Ed: Most folks we know tell us Tucson is in the Sahara Desert. As you know it isn't - Tucson ia at about 2000' above sea level and where we live, which is 25 miles noth of Tucson, we are at 3500'.

There are lots of lakes in this neck of the woods to sail a boat. There is a lake a couple of hours north of us and then there is Lake Pleasant northwest of Phoenix. The best place is the Sea Of Cortez, which is about 4 hours drive from Tucson - almost the same amount of time it took me to drive from Diamond Bar, Ca (near Orange county) to my boat in Long Beach. OK, that is a bit of an exageration but I have spent over 2 hours trying to get to Shoreline YC in Long Beach on a Friday night

I've conducted a couple of sail trim seminars for the Tucson Sailing Club and will be doing a couple for the AZ YC in Phoenix next year. I'll also be at the pocket cruise convention in Lake Havasu in Feb. What I've noticed is the further mates get away from the water the more rabid they are about sailing. Some folks traveling to the Lake Havasu gig are coming from Canada and other parts of the counrty. When I lived in So Ca I took the ocean for granted.

Now, Don, if you'd let us know that you would be rowing down to SD, we'd have tried to rope you into an impromptu on the water seminar on the bay.

wufibugs: I actually thought about mentioning the fact I'd be in San Diego (I'm in Orange, Ca presently) but at this time of the year all of you sailors are busy and I hate to inconvenience folks by bumming a ride on a boat and most of the west guys could teach me a thing or two about sail trim. Normally, we stay in your neck of the woods at the Chula Vista RV Resort but this time we stayed in the Mission Bay area. There was only one little lonely sailboat sitting out in the bay in the pouring rain. When it finally did clear we had lunch at Tom's Lighthouse on Harbor Island and while eating we saw a large Hunter pulling out into the cold, windy conditions and heading down towards the bridge. My wife asked me If I wished I was on that boat. Sitting warmly inside sipping a "tinney" I told her "hell no I don't" and I ordered a bloody mary!!

We might be back in San Diego (Chula Vista RV Resort) this summer but first I have to get over the trip from hell which was what I went through coming from Tucson in the massive storm on Monday.
