Bayou Evening

Just back in from an overnight in a local bayou.. The weather has been really great for the last couple of days.. Glad I was able to take advantage of it.. Mandeville to Bayou Liberty.and Bayou Bonfouca. Overnight in the bayou.. Toured the bayou today as far as we could go.. then back to Mandeville.. A fine trip ! Some ice on deck this morning but still fine! Motored back today because of no wind ..

Coldest it has been this fall.. was 30F this morning.. cabin warmed up quickly when I lit the oven to toast the french bread.. Thought about you last night, Ross. I heated turkey soup that I'd put up a couple of days ago.. Mighty fine on a cold evening!

How bad were the mosquitos in the evening? I've found at the marina in Mandeville, they have been pretty thick at dusk. I was doing some work into dark a couple of weeks ago and started to get light headed from the loss of blood.

TFrere.. We had no mosquitos .. Don't know why, but none bit.. We saw a couple in the cockpit while enjoying supper and a sundowner, but not anything like what I expected.. I carry a couple of the Thermocell devices and have found them to work very well back in the marina. One on the cockpit floor and one in the companionway threshold. Didn't have to use them. http://www.mosquitorepellent.com/ I have a couple at home too for enjoying the patio.
Andrew.. If you use "Google earth", you can go to 30 degrees, 15 minutes, north, and 89 degrees 52 minutes West and see the bayou entrance. It is like gunkholing because it is sheltered and mostly quiet and the clay/mud is great for anchoring. In the summer, the air on the bayou is too hot for sleeping and the jet ski traffic can really get annoying. This time of the year is fine sailing here..

The night time freezing will reduce mosquito activity.

So sorry to have missed you

We live in the first subdivision you come to on Bayou Bonfouca, heading in from the lake. Maybe you passed by it on your explorations. It really can be pretty around here at sundown (and the mosquitos can get rough.)

That was a neat looking place, Sandy.. We went up to the drawbridge and tied up at Nathan's (8 am) for a few minutes on Thursday morning.. Then back out the bayou.. We saw a pair of foxes at that burned looking place on the upstream side of the subdivision. Boat draws 5.5 feet so I was taking it slow/easy ..

I was told that in Maine as in all places they have four seasons: Almost winter , winter , still winter and boating.

Steady there, fella. Its too early for depression. We've got holiday festivities, football playoffs, maybe an unfathomable Winter Wonderland festival and then the stark bleak haul from February to April begins. By the Ides of March I'll be starting arguments about how big a boat you should have just for entertainment. :eek: That's the rough time.

Wow....this just makes me wish I didn't have to contend with winter. Winter stinks. I need to find a job that will let me sail south for the winter every year! LOL

we have seasons, too--- quake, slide, flood, freezeboootyoff....lol...about 6 days of sub 40 temps every year....with 52 degree water under hull, is a great fun season. oh yes- fire season--havent had that one for a coupla years.....waaay past time to sail south
