Picture hanging

I would like to hang some framed photos in our new home. I have seen others who have done this but never checked out how they did it.

So I am looking for a secure mounting method that will not require drilling into the surface. The surface is a teak veneer 3/4" marine plywood with a satin varnish finish. The pictures weigh no more than 5 puunds.

3M makes some materials that have adhesive on both sides yet are supposedly capable of being removed without marring the surface. From what I have seen you basically stretch the material to allow it to release. I haven't personally tried it but you might want to look into it. As far as the weight involved, this will be a stress calculation, so the more the weight the more adhesive surface you will need to carry the load. In my boat I had a mirror mounted in the head using adhesive pads until my wife decided she wanted to use the mirror as a portable one and yanked it off the wall. She must have thought it was velcro mounted. The adhesive pads failed and left some residue on the teak wall, I was able to remove the residue without damaging or marring the teak.

If you don't screw you have to glue, and that will ultimately be a lot harder to make disappear than the holes from #4 screws. Note also that behind the picture over time it will fade less and be a different color from the rest of the area.

I know nothing about this product, but have seen it advertised on TV. It is called UGLUE. Take a look, it may be the deal for your application.

Just be aware of all of the products that are advertised like this, the shipping/handling is usually more than the product.

I used 3M heavy duty Velcro to hang a large picture on the fwd bulkhead and after 7 years, so far, so good. It's actually pretty difficult to remove the picture for the annual wood oil treatment so it's a pretty tenacious gripping material.

The 3M Command line of products work very well on smooth to semi-smooth surfaces for pictures and and other light hanging needs. I have removed them after 6 months and they left no mark. They can even be reused if you get refill strips. See link below. BrianW

Tried that. The adhesive slowly released over time.

I've used 3M mounting tape too. It will hold for some time (months or a year), and then release, unless you use an indecent amount. For it to be permanent, depending upon the temperature and surface (FRP is better than wood) I suspect you need about 10 square inches per pound. Lots. Perhaps you can get light frames and replace the glass with thinner plastic. That we have done, and they stayed up.

Velcro does stick well to carpet liners; it's the adhesive that fails.

he 3M Command is truely awesome stuff. I even use it for work to mount stuff on the walls. It holds and will release clean after along time. Save lots of time not having to patch and touch-up.

I would be concerned about the glass in the frames. I had a picture pop off a wall once and had broken glass all over the floor.

Thanks. I am planning to replace the glass with a plastic of some sort.

Seeing as I can get the 3M Command products and the local Wallymart I will give them a try.

I used heavy duty velcro for my pictures, the largest being probably 16 x 20. Never had a problem in 12 years so far. I'm sure that there will be some residue to clean if I remove the picture, but as another pointed out the wood will not have faded like the exposed areas so the residue might be a relatively minor issue.

I didn't use the 3M product because I don't think it was on the market when I hung my pix.

I believe that the 3M product is rated on the package for load per unit. Weigh your picture and be sure.

Why the aversion to holes? It's likely an adhesive will make more of a permanent mark. As my handle here implies (Old Skool), my head mirror is attached not with adhesive and not with screws. It's through bolted!! One more thing I don't have to worry about. If I ever remove it, a few teak plugs, a little sanding and we're done.

Please forgive the satire, but maybe you should hire one of these marine professionals to install your picture for you. You'll pay their price but they'll have all the right tools, years and years of experience, and if it falls off you can engage their liability insurance!

I've had a number of new boats in my past life but a picture of two swans flying over head have been in most of my boats. In the early years I used velcro to put the picture on the bulkhead, It never harmed the teak (now cherry) when I removed it.

Now I second the positive comments about 3M's Command Hooks and picture mounting gear that I use it now in my own home. So much easier then screws or bolts and they work well. Removing them (to buy a new boat, etc) is a snap. I'm planning on putting a number of them in the head to hang my PDFs.

I think the trick to velcro is too use an oversized square. The stuff that peels off is because you used too small of a piece. Use enough to distribute the weight. I have a friend who has a heavy car type 30amo battery charger hung with velcro with no problem. e covered the entire back with the stuff.

I haven't used the 3M things on the boat.... yet.

But have used them quite a few other places. Notably a nice sized painting on a painted cement block wall for the last few years. No problem.

But, not such good luck holding a small bug strip that's exposed to the sun most of the day.

As Ross says there are different sized hangers according to weight.

See the link above. We have used this material to mount many things in our 356. They make it in black - the most heavy duty and clear. The clear is sufficient for most everything. It will peel off wood and leave NO MARK. This stuff is really stong and has worked for eight seasons on our boat.
