Ready for winter, Florida Style. Gonig sailing after lunch. Gonna raise/lower main and check out stack pack, gonna self tack the staysail , gonna backwind the yankee and blow it thru the slot. Gonna exercise the new ST 54 primarys. Note to y'all Charlotte harbor is written up again in Sail for November.

Your post is cruel to us northern sailors.

We are high-and-dry and tossing wood into our stoves to keep warm.

It is mean-spirited to taunt us with your afternoon sailing.....

Rich, try this: Mid-summer day, 15 knots, beam reach to your destination and back. Write it up and post it. Florida sailors can't sail because of lack of wind and/or heat. Maybe they'll get it then.

It really is true what Stu says. What is also true is it still hurts. :) If you can take the heat and humidity the Florida season is longer than our Lake Erie six months, May through October. We were in Tampa to work on the boat in May and it was 90+ everyday with humidity to match. So long as you don't mind your glasses being fogged over and your shorts looking like you peed in them no problem. Our plan had always been to sail Ladylove from January to June. I don't think we could have done that even if we had stayed. So my season in Florida would have been even shorter than up here on Lake Erie. Also something to be said for a 1979 boat only being sixteen years old.

i found sailing in florida much like sailing in kali--year round is no problem. we had no a/c--just sat at anchor between passages-- was cool and comfy with a tarp over house and breezes blowing thru. kali-- so cal--this year has been ungodly colder than usual -- cant wait to get into southern waters.....

So Cal cold!?!?!??! Trade ya! When the water here reaches 60 degrees, there is much rejoicing. Doesn't happen often.

ocean out of sin diego is 54 degrees. went all the way up to 58 this year.lol. we share same coldness of water underneath our keels-- so what is your excuse for not leaving yet?? i leave in dec...wanna come along??? warm water is first stop.....

boat repairs were my former excuse..i dont have too much left so i cant postpone my goal!!! hoooyaaahhhh!!!! warm water--here i come!!!!

coldest summer in 77 yrs!

I took my last sail today moving Free Spirit to its winter neighborhood when I get hauled Nov 7th it was a fast sail with an average 6.5 knots the 10 miles it took to get there then an oil change and topped off the fuel tank and tomorrow I'll remove the sails and finish winterizing all systems except the engine which will wait till the day I move it 300 yards to the travel lift......I hate this time of the year

Summer is a miserable time to sail in north AL--hot in the day with no wind. However, the summer nights are wonderful, though wind is rare. In the summers, I'd often leave work to sail if the wind starts to blow. This summer there was a period of about 1.5 months that the main'sl never was uncovered.

Sailing is very spotty in January and Febuary. Fortunately, though, I don't have to winterize anything if I leave the heat on, which is moot since I live aboard my Morgan OI. The hot water heater keeps my engine block pretty warm but I still put a space heater down low in the engine room out of paranoia. I also monitor the temperature of the hull below the waterline via an infared monitor. This is useful to predict when the heat pumps will stop working and prepares me to switch over to my little West Marine electric heaters. Last winter was unusually cold and I was without a heat pump for a week when the water in the harbor froze. I'm predicting that the heat pumps will be operational all winter--but I am prepared if they aren't.

Although we up here in the frozen north, have to contend with 5-6 months of not sailing. Our summers really make up for it, this past summer was just beyond belief great temps and plenty of wind, fantastic day and nite sails. After I put my Newport 30 away for the winter I'll bring out the snipe, 15' of sailing fun, on a nice warm day in oct & nov, maybe even dec. The ice doesn't come down the river until feb, if I had the snipe ready last year we could have been sailing in early march. Stay warm, watch out for the hurricanes, and hope for a milder than normal winter. Sail on

Typical Floridian rubbing our nose's in it but watch how they react when the temps drop below 50........you'd think the ice age was coming
and they can't go ice boat sailing :D

As a new sailer and wanting to get as much time on the water as possible, what type of clothing/foot wear /head gear would be suitable for a 16' sailboat. I am just begiinning my research with the goal of being ready for very early spring. I assume some form of wet suit.

Plan on getting wet, even if just from spray or water in the bilge. Dry suits can be much warmer, as you can add insulation inside. In the bad old days when we frostbit on Lake Michigan, guys with dry suits used to float around in ice water. My 1/4" wet suit wasn't that warm when immersed in 40 F water.

Who's got winter?

Yes, the Floridians are just now able to breath outside without a/c assistance or scuba gear. Go easy on them, all they have is a few months to gloat. The rest of the year they're under solar radiation assault, water temps near 90, Hurricanes, bad politics, & huge bugs!!

RAD is that the Great South Bay, I spent many a summer on that bay and the waterways around it. Great memories!!!!!!!!!!

Yes that is the Great South Bay and that ice boat picture was taken in Bellport a few years back........and I'm sure we share the same memories, this is a fantastic place to sail and play so here's some pics to enjoy
