I want sailing yesterday morning, then later in the afternoon I went mountain biking near my home. It was a beautiful slightly warm fall day and the leaves are in their fall colors. I was thinking how lucky i am to live in such a beautiful area and I wanted to let you guys know that if you are ever in this area contact me and i would be glad to show you around, take you to the sailing club and maybe we could go sailing. I thought it would be cool if others could do the same for other o'day owners (or other good old boaters).
My enfeebled mind managed to recall a podcast i heard a few weeks ago about house swapping and I wondered if anyone ever boat swapped. it seems like a cool idea to me. I thought about different problems that might arise and came up with some solutions on my own. Other problems such as liability would probably require a consultation with a lawyer friend of mine who belongs to the sail club at lake weiss.
A Google of boat swap yields a couple of hits that I want to explore, but I was thinking of trying to arrange something just among Oday owners.
Have any of you guys ever heard of anything like this? What do you think?
Keith

Keith,

Let me see. I will swap you a week at Lake Hartwell if you will move your boat to the bahamas for a week for me.

And then there is Rich, why not swap him a week over the Christmas Holidays. He can come down to where you can sail in winter and you can hide under his tarp while it is a blizzard outside.

You are the man.

And while he's here and I'm down there maybe he do a couple of my winter boat projects.:D But I would prefer for Keith to come up here when the boats in the water. Just drop me a line when anyone's in my neck of the woods.
(Nice photo of your sails Keith)

Re: Keith

Hmm, the bahamas,,,,,,,I wonder if my little boat would make it down there. Probably, but I think the issue is my seamanship, not her seaworthiness. But if i ever do make it down there i promise you can come down, no swap needed.

Keith,

A friend of mine, his son and his son's friend sailed from Miami to Bahamas a week of sailing their then returned to Miami.

In a 22 foot boat. Complained that going across Gulf Stream had to motor.

And he got the idea from another who now lives in Oregon who did it about 15 years ago.

An Oday 26 is much more seaworthy.

I went from Ft Lauderdale to Bimini an back in a 13 ft Boston Whaler. We had great weather (makes it easier!)

I don't know Keith. My wife and I don't go anywhere. We did more traveling on our boat when the kids were small and I was still working. Now, we go to church each week and eat at our favorite Chinese restaurant once a month and that's the extent of it.

Ol Salt,

Put things on a time line. How long did it take. Do you think Keith could do it in O'Day 26? Could Joe do it in his O222? Maybe they should race?

What paper work is needed over their?

I think I could make it across in my O'Day 222 Ed. I just wouldn't want to be buried that far away from home. :D

So its agreed then, by near unanimous vote (51 to 49) that we are all going to joes house in the spring, approximately two weeks after he launches (to give him time to have everything ready so we don't have to help him with any launching chores), while he goes down to ft lauderdale and gazes longingly but fearfully into the gulf.
hey, he could take one of those new fangled cruise ships to the bahamas, ;)

When I lived in FL, I use to keep my boat in a designated anchor in a beautifully protected cove with plenty of free parking for your car and Winn Dixie a mile away.. I use to run CL advert up North for people ( Anyone ) that was interested in free lodging on the boat and free sailboat usage to contact me. Get to see the area and not pay costly hotel charges. They just needed to bring their kayak or a raft with them when visiting FL to dinghy back and fourth to the boat. I had 2 couples and a single guy take advantage of it.. The single guy lived out there for 3 weeks in August.. WOW, must have been hot! My GF at the time and I went out sailing and hung out with 1 couple. They bought the beers and steaks. It was fun..

Keith -

I've seen the quality of work you have done on your boats. I'm more than happy to have you come use my boat in Wisconsin in return for a week on yours. Bring your tools just in case you find something that needs some attention :D.

thanks dave, that could be a great swap, i have a friend, Ed Szabo, in appleton who is an MD that works with the IHS. We served in okinawa together...really tough duty...NOT..
anyway i would love to see wisconsin. I could go up there in the summer (?) and you should come here in the fall, or we could swap at the same time. I could arrange to have someone meet you here and show you the boat, and the club and the lake, and orient you if i am not here.
Lets keep those things on the back burner for next season.
BTW, the camera makes the repairs look better than they are...but they are sound and dry, if a bit rough appearing.
