does anyone know if the center board (swing keel) rope on my ODay 222 can be replaced from inside the boat, or do I have to get the boat hoisted and the board let down to replace it. there seems to be an access port on the inside but I'm not sure what it accesses

I've done it
I have done this three times with my boat (long story). What you need to do is thread a wire down the pipe that leads to cockpit. It may not want to go down all the way; it may get stuck on the 'hump' part that is in the cabin, on the way down to CB. Another thing to keep in mind is there is a sheave (not on my boat for some reason) that helps the cb pendant roll down to the CB instead of chafing on the pipe that terminates inside the CB trunk.
After you get the wire to get through that choke point, you have to dive down and splice on your new CB pendant with the shackle (you can buy from D&R Marine) and pull the wire back up through to cockpit until you get your pendant line. Shackle on the pendant to the CB and tie a big knot onto the end that you use to raise/lower CB. Re-seal any fittings you had to take apart, like the thru-deck fitting that connects to pipe under the companionway step.
The only hitch with your boat is getting the wire fed through/over the sheave that should be inside the CB trunk. You probably would not be able to see it underwater; it's pretty dark, and it's high up inside the cb trunk (keel). Wasn't a problem on my boat, b/c my sheave is missing...

Is the pendant line still attached to your centerboard Keith? If so, you could tie a strong string to the end of the pendant line in the cockpit and pull the old pendant line out through the bottom of the keel and use the string to pull your new pendant line back up into the cockpit. Otherwise if the pendant line has parted, you're going to have to do it like Michelle did. Just make sure that the line is passing through the sheave up inside the keel slot. Probably the hardest part of the job is getting at the bottom of the keel to connect and disconnect the shackle on the centerboard.
Some of the O'Days have what is known as a keel/centerboard not to be confused with a swing keel which is altogether different. Your boat has an 800 lbs lead keel molded into the bottom of the hull with a 13" deep slot in the bottom of the keel for a fiberglass centerboard to pivot inside the keel. The centerboard only weighs about 40 lbs I think. I've never weighed mine to be honest with you. I removed it a few years ago and never thought to weigh it. Whereas a swing keel commonly found on the older Catalina 22s, Chrysler 22s, and Venture MacGregor sloops, is the keel and might weigh a few hundred pounds which requires a winch to pull it up and let it down.
