I have a 1975 Oday 25. It has a Seaboard # 2 jib winch that is bad. Can this be repaired ? What would be a good replacement and should I replace both at the same time. I have looked on the internet and done a search in the Oday section to no avail. Rudy at D&R Marine must be on vacation but his web site does not have winches on it. Thank you for any help and suggestions.

Attention: The Admiral is on deck

Looks like a Lewmar size 16 will do the job, and we see it on the Oday 25. If you don't have a Lewmar in place the hole pattern may not match, though.

Steve Sam,

The Admiral of the Fleet answer your question! WOW!

A Barlow 16 is also common on 025s's and 16's. The Barient equivalent is 10.

But!!! how many screw holes thru the gunnells?

Early boats used winches with four screws, later boats used 5. So, you need to look underneath the gunnell and count screws.

However, most likely the winch can be rebuilt. The little springs while not universal are generally interchangeable with the repair kit available from Lewmar at West Marine. Imagine that?

Note that disassembly often takes experience or a teacher. Do not loose any of the parts. Locate somebody who has rebuilt winches before and let him show you the tricks, and there are tricks and sometimes special tools. I have rebuilt several different brands and the kit from west has worked for so far. They also sell instruction book and winch grease. Could it be that your winch just needs good cleaning and lub job?

There is a guy in California who operates a rebuilt winch store on eBay. His prices are for rebuilt winches and are fair.

Rebuilding is easier than trying to match screw holes which is not going to happen. I do not recall the brand Seaboard, or at least do not remember the name. But there are many names out there that I hear for the first time. So that is no big surprise. Is yours so old it it wood?

Re: Attention: The Admiral is on deck

Thanks Ed

The boat is 30 years old. The Seaboard # 2 single speed winch is aluminum. The base is four inches in diameter with six holes through the gunnell. The winch uses a common winch handle. The winch ratchets in the clockwise direction but slips in the opposite direction. It would be easier and cheaper if it could be rebuilt. While I have no experience with winches this mechanism appears to be fairly simple. I think a good cleaning is in order but do not think that will solve the problem. My speculation is that the bottom spring is not working correctly. I am new to sailing and in Alabama so that makes it a bit harder to find experts but of course not impossible. Any thoughts are appreciated and I can contact West Marine about the rebuild kit it is worth a try. I will also try and locate a rebuild manual for a single speed winch and maybe that will shed some light on this matter. Would it be worth just going to the trouble and replace both winches with new ones that have parts and support. Harken tech recommended a B8A standard winch in aluminum. Thanks, Steve

Steve,

1. I have no experience with Harken winches, however otherwise they are know for quality.

2. Lewmar currently has great reputation and does supply rebulid parts and instructions. They are also very expensive both new and even used because they are sought after.

3. Six holes is unusal in smaller winches. If you get different winches you will have to fill holes and redrill. If you have not worked in patching FRP, read several books of instuctions before beginning. If you do not fill correctly and reinforce you will have leaks and weak gunnells. This site has information in the archives.

4. I would look on eBay auctions for Lew. He runs one of those mail order stores off eBay. You can reach him via email at Lew@whatsforless.com. He is a sailboater who gets on his boat and cruises for extended times, so you might not get immediate response. He may have gone to Tahiti.

You might ask him if he is familar with your brand and if he is how much he would charge to rebuild them. Winches are heavy so shipping alone will cost a few bucks. However, if he can rebuild yours, then no glass work would be needed.

5. You said newbie in Alabama? Most of our posts on the 25 occurs over on the owners board. There is sometimes a guy from Alabama on the forum known as Keith. If you can tolerate an Obama acolyte you might find out if you are near him. So post question to Keith on owners page.

6. The Lewmar kit and instruction book are also available directly from Lewmar on the web if you do not have a West Marine nearby. The grease too.

7. Do you have digital camera? Post picture of broken spring. I have searched the web for the little springs that go in the Barlow winches, so if you find a source for the small bowtie type springs let me know. Anytime you rebuild any winch you need a couple.

8. You might try seaching this web site for winch rebuilding information. I am sure others on the forum have do so and may have other sources of information.

9. When dealing with Keith, understand he is a big believer in Obamacare. Since he is in the medical care field, he believes everyone should be paying his paycheck.

Any other questions?

one quick suggestion.... cut a cardboard box so it can be duck taped to the area around the wench. Leave a nice side wall and long enough for a good working area and you will LESSEN the possibility of OPPS overboard something went!! This little trick has saved me a couple of times and since my fingers don't work together all the time I always used this trick. Also be sure to use good size backing plates of some type, when you replace the wench... Good Luck.
