I suspect you are going to be disappointed in the "manual". It is a double-sided sheet of legal sized paper. Nothing like what you get with a car or even an outboard engine. It used to be available for download on this site for free, but since the reconstruction of the entire website, I don't know where it is anymore. I have a paper copy somewhere at home that I keep meaning to scan and post for everyone, but I never get around to it. The paper basically consists of a few pictures of how to rig the mast and rudder. There are no schematics or specs of the electrical or plumbing systems, and no instructions on how to fix anything.

You can also check the I heart Odays dot com website. They sell manuals for various models and may have one for the 25. Also, I know that Rudy at D&R Marine (drmarine.com) will sell you a xerox copy for a very small fee.

Welcome to the forum. One of our Shawomet YC members owns a 1975 O'Day 25 keel/centerboard just like yours. I sailed it up to North Dighton on the Taunton River from Red Brook Harbor in Pocasset several years ago. I was totally amazed at how fast that boat sailed. I had her laying on her gunwale while sailing toward Newport that day. What a ride! I sailed her 17 hours straight and got into Third Beach in Newport about 1:00 AM and crashed in one of the bunks as soon as we anchored. The guy who owns it now, loves that boat.
You probably have a winch with a steel cable on the table stanchion for your centerboard. I'm pretty certain that the metal cable can be replaced with a braid line. Talk to Rudy at D & R Marine http://www.drmarine.com/ about this. I remember him mentioning this to me when we were talking about it one day in his store. Here's some pics of her that I took.

Good luck with that boat Jim. The O'Day 25 is great boat to learn on. Maybe you could post some pictures of it.

I also just bought an O'Day 25 myself (1983), so now I have 2 O'Day's (I still have the 222 that I have sailed for 10 years). I think the 25 (which I take possession of tomorrow) has a manual and I'll see what it contains. I'll get it scanned and posted at some point. I still love sailing the 222, but it was time for a step-up (even if its a baby-step) in size so I can do more cruising on Lake Michigan. I've done a fair amount with the 222, but have not ventured across. The bigger boat will allow that. Anyhow, I had the 222 tricked out pretty well. The 25 is in good shape, but I do have some things I want to do to it. It will take a few years but I'm looking forward to it.

Some of us who also have been here expect that newbies will learn to use this site and not be spoon feed. Some of us are not of the kind that we expect others to do all the work.

This site is not difficult to navigate and explore and learn. If a newbie comes so of us believe they have to learn. But for me to see you of all people not to know the basics of this site????

As for newbies asking without looking? Maybe they need to go to the local elementary school and learn how to read at 3rd and 4th grade levels?

And before this site existed, there was the early version of Heart of ODay's where he would send you a copy for a few shekels. But no, people want freebies without effort. Please note this is a political statement!

Congrats on the O'Day 25! After seeing all the specs and everything that went with that boat, I just can't imagine that you would need to do anything to it except hang a couple of nautical pictures down in the cabin. And I tried to talk you out of buying an O'Day 25! Personally, I think that I could have gone for that boat myself. Anyway, the best of luck with her.

I'm taking the family out sailing on Saturday. We have had an amazing October so far, and I have 2 weeks before I have to take the 25 out of the water. The 222 is already in my driveway, and pretty well cleaned up. There is a guy interested in it, so we shall see. I won't have a problem holding onto it and tinkering with it, but I do hate to see it sitting on the hard all summer which will probably be what happens now that I have the new toy.

Also, no offense intended to Phil, and none taken from Ed. Phil run's a great site, and I visit regularly. I've read enough on this site over the last 10 years to know its value and the Joe's, Ed's and many others on this site keep it informative and entertaining. I especially like the ribbing that Ed gives Keith, and Keith returns from time to time. I hope I'm not replacing Keith as Ed's main target though.

Now back to my work so I can spend Saturday sailing instead of working. The season is quickly slipping away.

So I clicked the link that Ed posted so nicely for Dave, those images are so small. How are you supposed to read them. Even when your reading level is higher than a 4th grader...... The "attack" on Dave is so unnecessary too, that kind of stuff makes people NOT want to use a site. Way to go....
