I just came back this afternoon from a short, somewhat gnarly, daysail. Strider was plugging along just fine but I returned because working so hard alone (no one crazy enough to go with me on a day like this) and getting wet doesn’t have quite as much appeal after laying down over 2000 miles of GPS tracks this season as it did back in the spring.

I was surprised, as usual, to see that the buoy report only showed 20 gusting to 25. It always seems like it should have been more but that was consistent with what I was recording with a hand held anemometer while waiting to see if it would go down enough to make the dinghy row back easier. I think few sailors realize just how much wind this really is.

This got me to thinking about reefing and winds speeds. Needing something else to pass the afternoon, I came up with the following.

Strider is a bit on the tender side so, when all sails are trimmed to optimum power and she is at a comfortable heel angle, the wind speed will be about 12 knots. This will leave a few inches of freeboard amidships. With her hull form, I sail with a few more degrees of heel than flatter and more wedge shaped modern boats. If I ease the main, pinch up a bit to let the jib tell tales lift a bit, and accept a bit more heel angle, the full sail plan wind speed goes up to about 15 knots. After that, it’s time to reef. Reefing at 12 knots will get me to windward faster. I can, of course, carry full sail in considerably more wind if necessary but it means a lot of flogging and diminished efficiency.

I got to wonder what wind speeds correspond to various reefed sail plans if you assume the same “aggressiveness” in trim and heel angle. Since I have the sail plan in CAD and used to be a sailing vessel stability expert, it wasn’t too difficult to come up with the slide show below. The first slide shows “12 / 15” in the upper right which corresponds to the wind velocities mentioned above. Each subsequent slide shows a reduced sail plan and the wind velocities which would produce the same heeling moment (and thus heel angle) with the sail plan trimmed for full power and with the same amount of de-powering that lets me carry full sail to 15 knots.



Boats with more sail carrying power, either through weight distribution or hull form, will sail at lower heel angles than my E 32 but the relationships in the slide show will be about the same for similar sail plans. It’s interesting that reefed all the way down only about doubles the wind speed that the boat can handle easily. Twice the wind speed is four times the wind pressure, however.

This shows why 30 knots of wind is a lot for most boats. Much more and you probably aren’t going to make much progress to windward. There’s a reason why they start to call it a gale when wind gets much over this.

Very good Roger. I often point out that the force of the wind varies as to the square of the velosity. So if you are comfortable with 12 knots wind then 17 is blowing twice as hard.

That is very useful. I know what feels comfortable but don't have enough experience yet to know what is "too much". This has helped put wind speed in perspective.

Was out early this am and it was only 15-18 but quickly built to 23-25 steady with gusts hitting 30+. Was texting with Tim R. who said they were seeing 34 apparent out by the Goslings at about 1:00.

I was sailing this am under a slightly reefed genny, which in the 36T balances her beautifully. It was a perfect solo sail on a beautiful fall morning. My next "reef" would have been to hoist main and shorten jib a little more but then the jib gets sloppy as it is a 150. Ideally I would prefer to swap out for my 100% jib then reef it slightly with two reefs in the main. I prefer to sail fairly flat as my hull form performs better with less heel. I find in winds over 30 a 100% jib, reefed, sails our boat quite nicely. I try to avoid beating when it is blowing over 25, but not always doable thanks to Murphy....:D My wind instrument captured a peak gust today of 36 while back on the mooring.

On another note one of the J 24's had an MOB incident today during the PYC race. After circling back and attempting to scoop the MOB out of the drink another crew member took the boom to her head, HARD. 911 was called and she was conscious at the dock but really hurt and confused and rushed to MMC.

25 knots and a boom to the head is NOT a good day. I hope she is alright. The skipper did everything right including not wasting time calling the USCG so they could ask the typical dumb litany of questions; "nature of the distress", "color of the vessel" etc. etc. on and on. He simply hailed PYC on 68 and had them call 911 while also relaying her vitals and physical state. The paramedics were on the dock when they pulled up and she was in the ambulance within a minute..

I'm glad to have that data point. I've often suspected that the NW winds in the bay are stronger than the buoy records. It makes sense since gusts are the faster moving upper air dipping to the surface and solar heating and turbulence are a major contributor to this. If you got 36 up there in the lee of the land, it would have been more down by the Diamonds.

I was coming up from leeward so it was tougher than starting out from Falmouth. I turned around off Long Island at 1040 and the bay was as impressive as I've ever seen it. There was a lot of tidal action right there and spray was being lifted up off the wave tops. Usually, you see lines of gust fronts coming down the bay but it looked like one long gust as far to windward as I could see.

Sobering about the boom strike. There was a death in a race in CT in the winds that came with Earl from a boom. It's one of my major fears and it's easy to forget about the boom when distracted by an emergency. I hope she's all right.

Here is another often overlooked factor:

This graph shows two wind speed vs time examples. Both would be reported as 15 gusting to 20. However, the energy input to the water surface which determines wave size is a function of the area under the graphs. The longer gusts of the red line would result in significantly larger waves. The longer period gusts also travel for longer distances on the water surface and, just as longer fetch makes bigger waves, the longer lasting gusts have more chance to kick up a sea.



It is usually the waves that are the problem; not the wind. The same nominal wind / gust measurement can create very different conditions. Today was like that, the gusts were very long lasting. It probably would have been more accurate to call it 25 dipping to 20 than 20 gusting to 25. Throw in cooler and denser air and you have impressive wave action compared to the same weather forecast in in July when the gusts tend to be brief puffs.

I have often wondered about the effectness of bike helmits for crew on boats.
Although I've read that sailing is considered a safe sport, I also have wondered how many people each year suffer head injuries of some sort from the boom, or falls, or generally loosing balance. And that if injuries are occuring, then why aren't helmets more commonly used for racing and also for general sailing when conditions get a bit rough?

Since I started sailing again three years ago, I've heard two VHF 16 exchanges about head injuries requiring medical assistance. And also last year an instructor at the sailing school that is located at my marina suffered a head injury while instructing Basic Keelboat/Basic Coastal Cruising. He turned out ok, but the concern was serious enough that he was taken from the dock on a gurny by paramedics and was transported to the hospital for precautionary observation.

I generally wear a bike helmet when sailing solo on central SF Bay where conditions during the summer season get gnarly more often than not. From my years working for a mining company (albeit in an office), I knew that whenever anyone has a thought about a safety concern, it probably is. So when I had the thought that having a helmet on might make the difference between getting hurt compared to just a self-embarrassing "that was a dumb move" moment, I put a helmet in my winch cover bin. I see it every time I stow the winch covers before a sail.

Just last week I was glad I did have the helmet on because I did make that dumb move. While going up on the weather-side deck to make an adjustment, I hadn't noticed that I had let the wind get too far directly ahead before setting the autopilot. A roll of the boat or perhaps a shift in the wind even more forward allowed the boom, which wasn't sheeted tightly enough, to swing in my direction. It caught me on the side of the helmet about where my temple would have been. The force was not very hard, but I'm sure without the helmet it would have been a painful knock at the least. Fortunately with the helmet on, instead it was only a powerful wake-up call that I am not being careful enough. I did have a mildly sore neck muscle the next day, so the force was probably more than just trivial.

Things happen fast sometimes on sail boats and crew positioning mistakes can be made. Helmets have become standard equipment for all sorts of sports. Most in-the-know skiers/boarders of all ages now wear helmets on the slopes. Bicyclists always don helmets. Construction workers are required to wear helmets even when the job has virtually no risk of head injury. Seems inconsistent to me that protective head gear isn't very normal for sailing.

It is amazing how much more affect the wind has on an air foil at 20kn in 50deg. than 20kn in 80deg. I will rig a 6.5m sail when windsurfing in 80 deg. with the same average wind in 50deg, I will rig as much as a meter smaller. Air density has a big effect.

Roger - I had an Irwin 32 which is the smae basic design as your E 32. I am not much for graphs and technical data, but sail by the seat of my pants. Certainly, the 32 going upwind, liked a reef around 15. Off wind, however, if you you could up witht he weather helm she would scream nicely in the heavy stuff. throw in some good sized quartering waves she could surf down and you got a great sail in that design.

Certainly, indeed. I thought it went without saying that this all applies to windward work. I can indeed carry much more sail off the wind as can most boats. Just being able to fall off enough to let out 6 inches of jib sheet with corresponding easing of the main has as much effect as a couple of reefs.

Many times, I've sailed close hauled up to the end of the bay with two reefs in main and jib, shaken everything out, and screamed back on a broad reach with full sail.

People who are not proficient at reefing often get in trouble setting off down wind and then turning around to try and go back to windward. I saw someone do it just yesterday when it was gusting 30 +. They headed out of the harbor on a very broad reach with full sail. Down near the harbor entrance they turned around. There was a lot of flogging and floundering after which all sail was taken in and they motored back.

If I know I'm not going have to sail to the moon up wind, I will pinch up in the groove in the gusts until I can head off, if I'm a bit over powered. Otherwise my C310 will need a reef at 15 in the main.

Reefing the sails

I was wondering if you could estimate how much sail area was left after each reef was taken in? it looks like about 40% of sail area is left after the third reef on the main and headsail...is that about correct?

thanks for the warning about helmets. our 2 kayaking helmets will henceforth reside in our deck locker..since we quit kayaking 20 yrs ago.

Complicated question. Strider, like most boats, often speeds up after a reef. My best speeds to windward are achieved in winds strong enough to require 1-2 reefs in the main and just a bit taken off the jib.

As you continue to reef, the parasitic drag of masts, stays, spreaders, and hull isn't reduced and continues to increase with wind velocity. The initial increase in speed comes from easing the helm and reducing drag from the rudder as well as getting rid of the drag of sail portions that may be de-powered by letting them luff. Continued reductions increase the ratio of hull and rig drag to sail driving power and speed begins to suffer.
