Inboard engine for a O'day 25

I have a Oday 25 which came with a Vire 7 inboard motor. I am thinking about replacing the engine due to lack of spare parts. Firstly, does any one have any recommendation on the size of a engine for a 25' with currant that run 3-5 knots. Does any one have a Vire 7. Is there any recommendation on make of replacement engine.

We had two members in our club who had gasoline driven two stroke sail drive engines in their boats. One guy had an O'Day 25 and the other member had an older O'Day 27. They both had problems with them. I'm not too keen on inboard gasoline engines and gas tanks inside a sailboat. One of the guys mounted a bracket on his 27 for an outboard. Most guys are using a 9.9 outboard with electric start and charging unit on their 25s. I think that this is the best and safest way to go. I would make sure that your transom is strong enough for it and if you get a four stroke make sure you use a heavy duty bracket. Rudy at D&R Marine sells a heavy duty bracket that is a lot cheaper than the Garelick bracket. http://www.drmarine.com/ You can check with him on it.

I sail a 25 with the same motor. Have only had to replace a few parts on it but it runs like a top. Hansen Marine in Marblehead, MA has always had the parts I've needed. For me, due to the age of the boat, unless something drastic goes wrong, the cost of replacing the inboard would be too much to justify.

I have the same engine on my '77 tall rig, fin keel OD25. Runs like a champ, moves the boat at 6.4 kts at full throttle. I always keep a spare impeller on board which I got from Hansen Marine.
