Up dating an Oday 30

My wife and I have just purchased an ODay 30. The boat is in great shape the previous owners have done a great job maintaining her. We would like to add a few creature comforts to the boat. An inverter as well as hot water. My understanding of inverters and alternators is weak. First of all in order to add an inverter to run just a handful of appliances Microwave, coffee pot and maybe a TV, what size Inverter should I buy, and what size alternator do I need? The engine is a Yanmar 2QM15.

To run all the stuff you mentioned requires a big inverter. It is easier to acquire some of the stuff that run on 12VDC.

When people want to run the amount of things that you do, they often add an on board generator, like the Honda generators. They have some ingenious ways to mount the things, including hanging over the sides of the boat.

Thanks. The 12 volt appliances would work fine even a 12 volt TV but an inverter would be needed for a microwave I beleive.

I have not seen a DC Microwave. First, that does not mean one does not exist.

On the otherhand, a 30 sailboat is not a fully and unlimited equiped apartment on water. Some have microwaves for use when hooked up to dock AC. When on the water, maybe you will have to learn to ruff it? Heat water on a two burner stove? Could that be why you see so many BBQ's on the stern rails? Maybe a learning curve involved? Go to a boat show and take a class on how to cook on a boat? Maybe become a Suchi fan?

I have an 1800 watt inverter that is used for the TV or Microwave and when we use the microwave we have the engine running with a 105 amp alternator and 500 amp hour of battery bank ,at the dock we never use the inverter cause were plugged in but while sailing or anchored the kids do use the TV but that doesn't draw the battery's down too much, as for coffee we have a camp type drip coffee pot or for tea we boil water on the gas stove.
As for hot water there is the heat exchanger type that has the fresh water cooling hose from the engine passing through the hot water heater so while your motoring your making hot water and while your at the dock your making it with electricity....you cannot make hot water from an inverter unless you had a lot of battery's
