I just purchased a boat with an Edson destroyer wheel. I'm new to all this, but the knob is missing from the center of the wheel - there's a nut that keeps coming loose, which makes the wheel wobble, but I'm sure there is supposed to be a knob that I can tighten by hand on the hub, I'm just not sure whether there's more to it than that. I haven't found a schematic of that part of the wheel on Edson's site, and am wondering what I need to do the repair.

They offer the standard nut with a knurled knob as a very expensive (and unnecessary) options.
My nut doesn't back off as you've described, but I have gotten in the habit of checking it regularly, like every half an hour.

Jim, Just take some teflon plumbing tape and wrap a few turns on the threads and then tighten the nut. If it still feels loose, just add a few more wraps. It should be fine then. The nuts from Edson are very expensive. Somewhere I have the thread size of the nut if you need it.

that thread size is a 1" 14 tpi.......you may find the new nuts at sailors exchange in St. Augustine, Fl ...i bought one new back in January of this year for $10.00.....they may be $15.00 now not sure if they went up or not ......

Fastenal.com has 18-8 grade for $7.50 or 316 grade for $12.32. Yes thats EACH. I would try the Teflon tape, it's cheaper.
