Sailing stories on PBS

Couple of good sailing stories on Public TV lately. One about the first non stop race around the world. Kind of a sad portrayal of guy who tryed to save himself from financial ruin by cheating the game. It caught up with him.

The other was a story of Several Irish prisoners of the British Govt. held captive for life in the empires most notorious prison on Australia. The story is of an attempted break out using a whaling operation & vessle as the means of rescue.

Not sure of the other but it is the story of the Sunday times golden globe race

The solo race program sounds like it was about Donald Crowhurst. The book, "The Last Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst" makes for excellent winter reading.

It sounds like a documentary that came out a couple of years ago about Donald Crowhurst. It was called "Deep Water".

I think Maine Sail has my copy ;-)

If anyone has Netflix, Deep Water is available to view instantly.

Very interesting, and fascinating to see how far we've come in electronic navigation. In the late 60's (when this occurred) the competitors still used celestial navigation as their only way to plot a course.

It's amazing how far we've come in 40 years!

Very good book. Old Donald was one weird character, but the maths he did to backtrack his courses with a sextant is a remarkable achievement in itself. He shoulda stuck around and given course on celestial navigation.
