I've read a lot of information on the pencil zinc in my heat exchanger. I own a 1984 Catalina 30 with a M25 Universal 3 cylinder diesal. Can someone please tell me the correct size of this zinc. Mine is gone and this is the first time I am making the replacement and I can not find the necessary information as to the lenth and diameter of this piece. Thanks for all.

Size 00C for a 2 inch HX, EAC01A for the 3 inch HX if you've upgraded.

The real world way to do it is to take the one that's in there out and go to a marine store and buy a handful, you'll never have to ask again.

Unless you change out your HX to the better 3 inch model.:)

Thanks Stu, however, are those part numbers or what. I just took ownership of this boat about one month ago. The zinc was gone so I cound not take it to the ships store. Just trying to get the actual size because it is an older motor and no one has been able to tell me which one will fit from all of the available sizes. Thanks again

Go to the store and look at the markings on the zincs. If you have the 2 inch HX, you're looking for a thin (less than pencil thickness, maybe 1 to 1 1/2 inch long zinc. You should buy one with the bronze thread head on the end. Bring the old thread head with you, it'll become obvious.

If you can't decide for whatever reason, buy a range of sizes and return what you can't use.

Then, most importantly, make a log entry that says you should check them every three months.

And while you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to to remove the HX and check to see if it sounds OK. If you rattle it and it sounds like a mariachi band, then open up the end caps and see what drops out. Also check the inlet port where the H20 from the raw water pumps goes into the HX. That's where a BIG clog usually occurs. To find replacement end caps and gaskets, do a search on "Sendure" on our website, they have them. You could make your own gaskets, too.

I did this the first month I had our boat in 1998, shaking in fright that I'd mess something up. Just take it a step at a time, and become one with your engine. It'll like you better for it.

OBTW, our C34 website has TONS of important information about your engine and the rest of your boat's systems. Feel free to look around on our message board and the C34 tech wiki, which has more about your M25 engine than I've ever found on any other website so far (the C36 guys are pretty good, too).

Oh, and there's always this: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,5078.0.html

It applies to YOU, too.

All the best, lemme know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Have a great weekend.

Catalina Direct uses the size of the wrench you'd use to unthread it to determine which zinc fits your heat exchanger. I have the M-25 in a 1984 C30 with the upgraded 3" heat exchanger. I use a 9/16" box wrench to remove my zinc. Here's a link:

Click on any one of the zincs you see there and read more about sizing it from Catalina's tech info.
