First let me say hello to everyone. I have been reading this forum for quite a while prior to buying a "new to me" 1978 Oday 23 this past weekend. The amount of knowledge available on this site is wonderful. I don't know much about the history of this boat, other than it did spend a great deal of its life on a trailer during the winters. It is in wonderful shape for it age. My plans are to take my time and go over it stern to bow, pull all the hardware on deck and epoxy and redrill, check the bulkhead / chainplate for rot, etc. The transom and hull are strong, and I can find no soft spots anywhere. I am stumped on one of the thru hull fittings. I understand the thru hull fittings for the marine head, but there is one on the port side, below the waterline that I am unsure of. It may not even be a thru hull. It looks like it is inline with a ring (transducer?) mounted inside the hull. The part outside the boat looks like a thru hull that allows water to enter while at speed. The marine head and holding tank do not look like they have been used.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the boat. My friend Rudy of D & R Marine http://www.drmarine.com/ has all the parts for these boats and is quite knowledgeable about O'Days, having worked at the Fall River Ma. O'Day plant many years ago. We were talking about the O'Day 23 one day and he told me that the O'Day 23 was one of the best boats that O'Day ever built. One of our past YC members had an older 23 with a keel issue, but he loved the boat. I liked the interior of his boat very much. I've never sailed the O'Day 23 but if it's anything like my O'Day 222, I'm sure that it's easy to single hand and is quite capable of going anywhere that the larger O'Days can go. Good luck with her.

My Oday 23 has 2 of those. I think on is for the knot-o-meter and one is for the depth sounder. Do you have any pictures of your boat? Would love to see. We should have an Oday 23 regatta. I'm only one state away and have the same boat. I'm a newbie but am here to help any way I can. Let me know.

My boat is a 1980, but it does not have that fitting. We are on our first season with ours and it's proved to be a great boat for day sailing and weekend overnighting. Our boat is on a lake that has a lot of days with shifting, gusty conditions, rather than sustained winds. I'm told the boat will stiffen after heeling over somewhat, but with fluky winds it is harder to keep the boat in a groove. On days with steady 8-10 knot breezes, the boat performs very well and seems to sail best when heeling at about 10-15 degrees. Besides, when we lean over more than about 15, all the stuff our kids leave out in the cabin starts sliding around

Generally, we have pretty light winds in the summer and our Oday does really well with it. We have a 130% genoa and as long as there is a little wind, we're out there.
