I took the Sailing and Seamanship through the USCGA last year. They didn't mention it. Could it be beyond a certain size boat, or maybe if your a legal American.

havent heard of this little bit of info---i have a 41 ft boat--there is no requirement as yet for a tracker beacon on board. when there is, i shall become a citizen of a 3rd world nation with no technology.

Coast Guard has no authority over anyone "at sea," provided, you are at least 12 miles offshore. And requiring a GPS locator beacon on personal use watercraft would be political dynamite anyway. Big Brother goes high tech. Can you imagine?

This is oh so not true. They can and do stop and board vessels from every country as far as a hundred miles or more off our coast and do so under treaties with most every country. Chuck

As far as I know, only commercial boats are required to have an EPIRB, or similar device. I'm with zeehag on this one. If they start making such requirements, I'm outta here.

If you are US flagged the USCG can stop you anywhere in the world, including inside the territorial limits of certain countries that have such agreement with the US.

Drew, hate to differ but if your vessel is registered in any of the 50 states or US territories the USCG can board and command your vessel anywhere in the world. Regarding the locator beacon you are right but when and if they decide to create a stimulus program to equip all vessels with EPIRBs I'm in.

Well, since no one knows for sure.... I vote for Craigw1997 to give the coast guard a call and ask them what this business is all about. Then he can enlighten us.

Just FYI: Australian recreational vessels are now required to carry an EPIRB-406MHz , registered with Australian Search & Rescue, on board, if two nautical miles or more offshore. It does not have to be equipped with GPS. However, the latter narrows locator accuracy from 5 km to 120 meters.

Whoa, didn't mean to stir the pot up. Original question was on REGULATIONS at sea. USCG gets a vote (through treaty negotiatiion, as noted) but they don't dictate requirements, in regulatory terms, in international waters. ENFORCEMENT is a totaly different thing. The guy with a cannon on his bow is ALWAYS right if you ask me, no matter where you are!

And I took the original question to mean some sort of transponder that continually transmits vessel's location, not an EPIRB-type safety device, activitated by crew at their discretion. Very different things.

Too much time at work splitting hairs. I should go sailing....

If you don't have one , How can they tell? Your boat sinks and you drown without calling for rescue, who do they charge?

They board you before you drown and write a ticket. You don't pay it and they'll go after your estate for the fine,

Only if you are under house arrest and have a court order to wear a gps cuff.
