So..What are some budget improvements planned for next year's season?

So far it's been a great summer of sailing, and thanks to all the folks here, It's been safe and I've learned tons of info here!
I know it's a bit early but I'm always thinking of how to improve my O'Day 22, in terms of what I would change after I pull her out this Fall.
A few things that come to mind...I need to replace my mast light, develop a better way to stow sails, maby add a cockpit light, change my motor mount (make it easier to lift out)...those are just a few ideas.
Please share your budget minded projects!

A handheld VHF radio. It's nearly impossible for me to use my radio that's mounted in the cabin when sailing alone.

I forgot to mention upgrading the chainplates.
I was thinking of that today....20 degrees at 5.5 knots.
Lake Erie has some pounding seas....white water...all over the bow....
Bone in her teeth....everything flying around today......
Last Thurs we were 15 miles from the Canadian boarder (guesstimate...we saw the cans....) and headed back, not really much up there and now it's a PITA.

Just Installed a new Teleflex shift cable

Couldn't wait until next season. My transmission shift cable has been getting gradually more difficult to shift over the years and I finally took the bull by the horns and did it. Bought a new shift cable - Teleflex extreme, that was the easy part - and then the next job was installing it. What a nightmare.

I procrastinated as long as I could and finally I couldn't live with myself any longer and started the job. Turned out to be almost worse than my wildest nightmare. Followed the instructions by Edson but it wasn't enough. Wound up unbolting the pedestal to get the old one out without ruining it and, of course, getting the new one in without ruining it.

This project spanned three days in order to avoid the heat. Worked mornings until 1pm and then in the late evenings. Finally got 'er done and, I have to say, it was worth all the effort. The old shift cable required a lot of pull or push on the lever and the new one, well, I can shift with my little pinky! Yea!

Next year? Well, I'm going to really enjoy the rest this year and give next year some thought.

Just had a brain storm: Video. That's for next year. Taking video pictures of sailing trips, activities, etc.

As has been said previously, actually getting my own boat..... Like that idea of sailing when I want and not waiting on club availability. Of course the expenses are a bit more then.

As soon as the weather turns cooler I will be replacing an AC unit with a reverse-cycle unit so I will be more comfortable this winter living aboard.

I've already done one upgrade I've been wanting to do for some time: replace my 45W solar panel with an 80W and mount it properly on the stern. Done that. ;) Also, replace the Danforth with something that sits well in the anchor roller, and replace the anchor roller. I have the parts for that, just have to Do the Deed.

Then there's the myriad of little projects: replace the cigarette-lighter outlet, install the fishing rod holders, install the downrigger, make a bookshelf in the V-berth...

Of course, my "winter project" is to get the Volvo diesel running properly and build a boat around it. But that would be a powerboat, so I won't mention it here... ;)

Jerry, is there some kind of blue-tooth or other wireless device you could get to have on deck? Kinda like using a hands free cell phone while driving?

Druid, out of curiosity, what kind of anchor did you get to replace your Danforth? What kind of bottoms do you generally anchor in?

I know Uniden makes a "WHAM" microphone that is paired to the radio allowing intercom and full radio control of the main unit. Of course that would lead to replacing the main radio as well:doh:, but that is the joy of EBAY. Amazing what people discard. Actually found 3 VHFs :dance: and even a LORAN receiver for sale! Which of course leads me to say buyer beware.:naughty:

I wish I could get to the point of thinking ahead. After this summers nightmare, which is not quite completed yet, don't even have an inclination to think of future projects. Budget or not. Will just be happy to get all this crap done and completed, in time to do some nice fall sailing.

I have started marking my nicks & dings so that I can repair damaged gelcoat. redid the nonskid 3 years ago when we boaught the boat. It is time ot fix the small dings. Also need to redo my anchor roller & anchor locker. Not ergonomicially designed.

Mine is Wham compatible, but have you priced one? The name must represent the sound your jaw makes hitting the floor when you see the price tag. I can by a handheld for the same money, and then I'll have two radios. I've been watching the Wham mics on ebay. If the price is right on one, I'll own one.

Based on my survey of boats in my marina (80% had Bruce) and a friend's advice that he uses a Bruce and cruises to Alaska, I got a Bruce. MAINLY I anchor in 30-60ft of water with a mud bottom. There are a few anchorages that have kelp the anchor has to bite through, and sometimes it's rock or sand or...

So for mud the Danforth is fine, but for the kelp... not so much ;) AND now I have to wriggle the anchor through the hole between the roller furling and the pulpit - I want one that sits on the roller. Oh, and currently the "roller" is basically a slot, and the rode jumps out of it every time the rope/chain loop goes by.

So it's mainly an "ease of use" upgrade.
