......so I just want the outboard to move the dink - FAST.....big torque is not needed - but moving the zodiac along quickly is the purpose of this engine.
Sorry, didn't notice that. What size is the dinghy or did I miss that also? If you want it to go fast chances are the 4,5 or 6 or not going to do that.

Our 5 HP .....

....with the orginal prop will get our 9 ft Zodiac just barely up on plane with just me and I weight 165. With Ruth and I in the boat it won't. It is rated for an 8 HP and that probably would plane with both of us with the right prop. Chances are if you want it to plane with more than one person you need the largest outboard it is rated for. If you can't get it up on plane then it is like a sailboat and won't make much difference what HP it is.

It takes a lot of HP to get an inflatable up on plane. Ours has the inflatable keel that helps, but a hard bottom would help even more.

Good luck,

Sum

Border crossing

I am located in Canada - but it looks like that carries about a 50% premium on the price tag - and since we live 45 mins from the boarder, am considering ordering from these guys :
I recently bought some used winches from a Canadian. US customs was difficult and slow. Not expensive though. Don'tknow how the would be on export. Don't know how they would be on New Outboard. Maybe you should inquire.

Thanks Sumner for the info - I never considered that - the Dink is a Manta 8.8 foot - rated up to 10 HP - however you are now making me think that a 2 or 3.5 HP will be almost the same as a 5 or 6 HP......displacement boating....unless I go whole-hog for a 9.9 - bot those damm things weigh about 100 lbs+......ugh.

Lots to consider - like everything else on the boat, we have compromises !

Thanks for your inputs !! (more to stew on)

border is a piece of cake

Thanks for the heads-up....but for us Canadians, the border is pretty straight forward. Just bring cash or plastic, and no problems.

Last year I ordered a new PH-II Raritan conversion unit, Ronco Tank, and all the hoses (about 600 bucks worth of stuff) from SBO.....had it delivered to a receiving company in Ogedensburg NY (40 mins drive from my place south of Ottawa).

Drove down, paid 5 bucks or so for the receiving fees, stopped at CDN customs on the way home - presented the receipts - paid the sales Tax, and drove home - less than 10 mins wasted with the tax collectors !!

So no - I am not at all concerned about the importing.

What I do find amazing is that the CDN dealers seem to be able to gouge a 50% markup over US prices on outboards.....when we have a CDN dollar at about $0.98
US.....which I find to be totally unacceptable....someone is taking a very large chunk of change for very little value added....and for that they deserve to lose business.
