1991 Beneteau 38s5. On long passage from Tonga to Hi. I sustained wear to the mast base from movement between the mast and mast base. I will have to pull the mast to determine the damage and repairs/prevention needed. Anyone have this problem before, on any type of deck stepped vessel and what was your solution?

My 42 year old boat with the original mast and mast base don't show any wear. This could be corrosion but aluminum is not a good choice for tooling for machining aluminum. The base is fairly thin and the base of the mast should be showing also some distortion. Pictures will help.
That's moderatly common. you have a lot of forces working on a joint that held together basically with tension. It will work and loosen over time.
The mast /base interface is a compression loaded joint and there should be practically zero movement at that point. It would have to be considerably worn to cause the rig to go slack.
