I stumbled across this today.

It seems like a curious option to charting/ route planning for those who do not have a high tech set up yet.

I did a quick scenario based route/ sail plan and it found and sent to my hand held GPS.

I don't know how well maintained this site is but hey maybe its of some use.

This site is pretty cool, but it doesn't show any navigation aids. It's basically a route planning tool based on Google Earth ... I wouldn't navigate with it, though.

You can download NOAA charts and Nav software (SeaClearII) for free that work well on a low end computer.. You can plug your gps into the laptop if you want to it to navigate in real time, or just download the route data.

Google "NOAA charts" and check out the free chartkit downloads.. you'll be stoked.

Joe, All the stuff on the original chart is there.. keep zooming in .. also in the top right corner there is a "Chart Content" button.. click on that and you can adjust so you can see only the NOAA chart or only the Google map.. or you can see both.. Pretty slick. I found this site a couple of years ago from an article in Sail Magazine..

Correct. And I'm not thinking of using it rea time. I agree with Joe that I would use ot for a trip plan.

I'm going to c heck out your suggestions on the other though. I have a really decent hand held GPS and a, looking for a way to use it real time to my laptop.

Thanks for the heads up.

These are legitimate charts

The site is based on the work the NOAA guys did, when they put their charts online. I had a chat with them at the NOAA booth 2 years ago in Annapolis.

Charts and referance grid

While it may be based on the NOAA charts is it geo referenced accurately? This would be fine for piloting but I'd not be getting my GPS coordinates from it.

In any case you would have to still have paper charts (or a $1000000 nav system) so what is the attraction. There are plenty of free chart planning and navigation software programs out there that don't require an internet connection to work. Don't really see the attraction.

Great for NORs

A lot of times when we put out notice of races, I go there and grab that section of the chart to insert into the NOR. It avoids a lot of questions, especially if you annotate.
