Good day all,
Yesterday in Casco Bay, Maine it got foggy but still enough wind to bring the boat along quite nicely in 1/4 mile visability. We finally had the camera available to get a shot of the knotmeter. I would say that we were doing quite well for a Catalina 30.

Nice! I haven't sailed there since . . . umm 1975? Coastal sailing isn't the same out here, unfortunately.

GPS reported that we hit 8.37 on our lake tonight - I think we were surfing a wave though, not cruising along like you were.

Is that a paddle wheel type knotmeter? I find that I have to calibrate mine frequently to get accurate readings.
We had one of those. If we didn't like the reading, we'd just pound on the bulkhead till it gave us a speed we liked. :)

I've checked the speed against GPS over ground and it's been pretty close. With an extra couple aboard, the list was less than 15 degrees. We were crossing Hussey Sound which is always a bit more brisk than the rest of the bay. We did come against the disorientation issue since the helsman hadn't ever been in a fog.....while sailing...well alright I did a final trim and returned to the helm replacing my friend. Those old people can have a pretty strong grip. I would just say thankyou to those who have answered my questions over the years for sail trim, rigging, leak fixin', and navigation. Our old boat seems to be working fine. :D

Paddle wheel and it usually has eel grass or seaweed stuck in it. I wish Raw Faith was more visable for a photo, it would have made good Christmas Cards. Too much traffic that day and my friends really didn't care to be in fog and harms way. Our radar picked up most of the boats and lobster bouys and really was comforting to our guests. We broke out of the fog near the Tugboats just in time to avoid ferrys, schooners, and lobster boats. Still a great day in Maine.
