Ignition Buttons

I am experiencing starting problems this season. Can anyone give me a little input regarding the starter button on the standard Oday 272LE ignition panel?
After holding the glow plug in for the required 20-30 seconds, then pressing the start button (at the same time) - the diesel is not starting as easily as in previous years. It doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold - I have to continually "play" with the button, which quickly depletes battery power. Batteries have been tested and are OK for the task, but it just won't turn over at times. Has anyone ever changed out the button or the panel - and if so, is it a difficult task and/or best left to the yard mechanics?

I assume it is a Universal engine.

This may not be your problem but if nothing is happening when you press the starter button, or you just get some clicking, try looking at this link. Most probably it is item #3, the original wiring is just too small to carry the solenoid load when it gets old. Rewiring from the switch to the starter is not too complicated. Also, I reconfigured the wiring betweeen the glow plug button and the starter button so you don't have to hold the glow plug button in to activate the starter. That saves more juice for the starter.

Yes, I do have the Universal and the clicking is loud and clear.
So apparently, this has been an issue for some time now. But I do like your
suggestion on re-wiring so it is not necessary to hold the glow plug.
