Look what followed me home...

This looks like a fog bank that could stick around for a few days... One minute it's 8-10 knots and perfectly sunny the next you're in pea soup. It's kind of like the "Smoke Monster" from lost..;)

That is unreal. Fog is crazy. I left the mooring once and once past the channel realized there was a fog bank partially obscuring a moored freighter. I realized that the closer I got the the freighter the less I could see it so I turned tail back to my mooring. Fog can become a problem FAST.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
better the fog than the 100 degree heat with humidity that is as thick as pea soup!

Actually, we've had that, too, though the last couple days haven't been quite as bad (on the coast) as Tuesday was.

One thing

One thing we don't have a lot of around this part of the country is pea soup fog. At least some things we miss out on aren't bad.

that's mist. This bank blew in like a river of grey cotton in the space of five minutes. The view is from Isleford (Cranberry Islands) towards Northeast Harbor (Mt. Desert). The lighthouse is about a mile off. Visibility in the bank when we got there was about 50'.

Woke up in a fog bank while anchored out so waited for it to burn off for an hour or so.It was very clear and so we got under way just to hit another fog bank


Visability droped to yards and I can't tell you how nervous I got when I heard a motor in the distance,:eek:

Mist to us Mainers..;);)




We were sailing towards Isle Au Haut when this bank moved in. Went from a beautiful sunny day to 50-100 foot in a short period of time and we were in it for the next two days. This is how it started..




Of course a little fog makes for beautiful surroundings at anchor..

Went for a sail today and the fog again tracked me down. Quite thick today.


On the mooring standing on the bow looking towards my neighbors boat:


This is what I was looking for:


As the fog started to lift vis went up to 50+ feet....;)


It's actually quite tough to get the camera to focus in the thick stuff....:doh:

Official Who's got the worst fog contest

I challenge all you Maine Sailors to an official "who's got the worst fog contest." After sailing in fog for about 90% of my sailing career along the coast of CT, RI, and Ma. I contend that the fog there is as bad or worse than the fog in Maine. Many days I had trouble seeing the bow of my 25 footer and had to learn to sail in it or not sail since there were so few days of nice high visibility conditions.
In order to run this contest we need to have MaineSail set up an experiment by capturing some fog in each area and determining who's fog is worse. I look forward to hearing how he proposes to measure the fog.

Fog my 2c

After 50 years or so of sailing out of MA bay ive come to these conclusions
You get some fog in MA less fog in RI and on cape cod where the water is warmer.
But Maine has the most fog and the coldest water. The further east you go the colder the water. The thicker and more frequent the fog Say what you want guys, for the best
cruising and the most interesting scenery nothing beats the coast of Maine

Easy answer, neither of us wins. The THICKEST fog is in the Bay of Fundy!!!! Cut it with a knife thick......:eek: This fog does start East of Schoodic though, which is in Maine...

From my office window on Commercial Street I can watch the fog roll in and out all day. Most days I watch it lurk on the other side of South Portland.

nothing like the mournful sound of fog horns all day to get you feeling all spooky and wondering when an axe murderer will jump down from the lighthouse and go on a rampage. Do you guys have any statistics on fog versus violent crime rates in the area?
