Going Going, almost Gone

Got the shaft log repaired, the shaft seal back in place, engine aligned,motor mount bolts changed out and everything bolted down and done. So I spent three hours this morning removing the backing plate for the pedestal. Was certainly just in time, and probably way too long in being done, but out of sight out of mind. In fact is someone on this board hadn't said something, I might not have looked at is as hard as I did. No way that puppy would have lasted another year. So, now I am once again shopping for parts. Unfortunately the way it's made, a simple plate under there won't work. The sheaves are mounted in such a way as to make home made not an option. So I am still crawling around down in the bowels of a boat, and listening to the radio and getting more and more frustrated with the oil spill. The world and work goes on. Pics attached.

Wow Easy, Thats really scary. I guess that the out-a-sight, out-a-mind things can creep up on one. Whats the age of that gear? It's pretty corroded. Dick, S/V Puffin 1990 H-33.5.

It is fairly old, vintage 1981. I'm positive it is the origional. It doesn't show up in the photos, but where the sheaves are adjusted, around the screws it is corroded all the way through. Probably that doesn't make a difference as there is no way anything on there is going to adjust. I looks like approx. 50% or more of the origional material is gone. And those screws are the 12 dollar each items that Edson sells. And once again thanks to this board, I have already found another backing plate, made of bronze,looks like new, and ordered same. For less than half of the Edson price for a new one. THANK YOU SAILBOAT OWNERS

Golly, Easy, I guess all this hassle was really a blessing in disguise. Makes me appreciate my hydraulic steering--graceful degredation (no surprises). I wonder what horror stories are lurking aboard my boat. Ignorance allows me to sleep good at night.

corroded mess yes, but seems like a good idea. cables come from the wheel to each sheave and are directed to other sheaves to change direction of travel.. vert. to horiz.
the pivot allows for fine tuning to get the sheaves lined up. hey.. dont throw the sheaves away. may need new bushings, but they don't look wore out. jimbob

wow !!and yipes!!! i guess we kept our team of guardian angels really busy!!! dang---wow!!!
when you get yours perfect, come help me with mine!! i promise the boat is cooler in temp than yours is and i can promise no lightning storms!!! no hurrycames!!!! and , forthe moment,we still dont have oil!!!!!!! heck if ye wait long enough i may just have the stove installed and bread in the oven!!!!

Ross I've never seen aluminum look like that. I'd have to put a magnet to it. I'll go for the aluminum screws in a stretch. but to leave that much crudd, there has to be lots of ferrite there somewhere. jimbob

Is that what caused this? I am scared now to look at mine. Well, I'll have to wait until I get home... then I'll be scared to look at mine.

the p.o. had auto pilot put on the wheel a year bfore we purchased. same time as the new beta marine. the cables leave the pedestall and go thru the engine room then make a 90 back to under the aft seatee. thats where it gets cramped. there's a pretty good size door there, but all the work would be flat out on the belly. in arms reach. don't want to think about it. jimbob

When steel rusts there is no white only dark reddish brown. The green streaks indicate the bronze.

I stuck a magnet on that rusty piece, and it is magnetic. So, is as I thought, some kind of ferrous metal. Isuspect that the disimilar metals are a big part of the problem. The one I bought is from a Yacht Specialties pedestal, will have to be slightly modified, but is all bronze.

Sounds like you are making a lot of progress, Phil.. My old Merriman/Yacht Specialties (1985) is aluminum, I think.. That bronze one you have must be from an older one and is probably an OUTSTANDING replacement for your old steel one.. I am lucky since I have pretty good access; under a cover in the ceiling of the aft bunk.

the maine plate is mild steel and the sheves are bronze along with the forks on the trunions .....this is what my 30 year old one looks like off my S2 my cockpit held water very well or mine would be in the shape yours is in ....my friends allmond 35 looked about half way between yours and mine but we were able to weld it back to good repair....theses edson parts are very pricey

i like the fact that you found a bronze one to replace it with.......

oh BTW when you relaod your steering cables make sure you cross them in the coloum or you will be steering bass akwards:eek:

jimbob--check your condition of that thing with a camera--take the pic with a digital and flash and ta daa---there is something to examine for condition--not a guarantee, but as it is out of site out of mined, the pix should be able to tell you something about it......
